Depeche Mode was always known as a pop-electronic band that was different from every other band back in the 80's. It's unique style of music involved synths and other electronic sound adding to its music the use of different noises the band members would produce and record it as part of the song. Thus we could find in the band's songs various sounds which then would be explained by the band members as soundsproduced by hitting and smashing things and record the sounds it would make. Indeed, unique and fantastic delivered in their albums during the 80's. As came the 90's, Depeche Mode discovered it's rockier side, it's dark side, and from this dark side of the band came the best album to date by Depeche Mode, the 1993 album Songs of Faith and Devotion. No more synths, no joyfull electronic music, but dark and rockier music by a band who made itself famous in the electro-pop stream. Does it work? You bet you! The album starts with the song I Feel You which is one of the bands great rock song ever to be produced. Right from the beginning of the song you could notice that something gone bad but in a good way. How is that possible? Yes, it is. Something gone bad, there is no electronic music here, there is the new Depeche Mode. The song I Feel You is a combination of Blues and Rock with Martin Gore working his magic on the guitar and Alan Wilder on the drums, Depeche shows in this album they have grown. No more cheerfull pop band but a rockier band that comes from the strom and with this album it is felt. The second song Walking In My Shoes is a bit softer but it is a great song. You could feel the bands growth with every song in this album. The lyrics of Martin touch deep in your soul. Rock or no rock, dark side or light, this album delivers, and what is delivers is a message to all. A message music can be more than just something we put in the background, music can deliver a message and a story. You can feel the band's difficulties as the album progresses, you can feel their faith and you can find new faith in yourself just by letting this album fill your mind and soul. I will not write about each song and song here because I do recommend you have it. This album has soft songs such as Higher Love and rockier music such as In Your Room, but know that each song has something for you, something you could relate to, something about life. complete your music shelf with this album. This is no ordinary album, this is the true story of Depeche Mode and what they deliver here can affect you, can make you think and really feel for the first time perhaps what true music is and what story is told through it.
