Funny Twilight Title

Very recently, I was lucky enough to finally sit down and watch one of cinema's most provocative and discussed films, Twilight. It's almost weird even typing the name, as I would never have expected to watch and review this movie, let alone do so with a sort of high anticipation. Let me explain: I remember this one day I was at my old job, and everyone was telling me about this disgusting online video that was sure to make me hold back a drop or two of vomit. Some were saying that I just had to see this video, while others warned me, saying it is so gross, and not to put myself through the horrid imagery. Curiosity killed the Matt, and I went straight home and watched 2 Girls 1 Cup, and forever will I think differently about soft serve.  


What I'm trying to get at here, is no matter how much I was warned about just how nasty this video was, I had to see it for myself. That is kind of the same thing that happened with me having to watch Twilight. Part of me was willing to put my taste at risk, to see something that I knew would be just plain awful. But just how awful could it be? That's the draw. I heard every complaint about Twilight more times than I would care to, but that may have just added a little fuel to the fire, making me want to see the movie even more.


Now, I have more than once expressed my love for bad cinema. While I am constantly on the hunt to expand my celluloid horizons by watching all types of film, and as much as I love a Harold and Maude, or a Rashômon, I almost equally love something like The Room, or Trick or Treat. At times, my bad taste even extends to a certain enjoyment of films that are pretty much terrible. I can find something about them that keeps me watching and interested. I actually thought that Twilight might be that movie in the dark moments leading up to my maiden voyage, however, I was quite wrong.


Strangely, I am really wanting to see New Moon and eventually Eclipse, because I have to see just how bad it can all get. While I can find great joy in laughing at a movie that has me scoffing about terrible performances, moronic puke faces, terrible cinematography and awful music, I didn't find much joy in Twilight. I should love this film for how terrible it is, but it is just that horrendous that it cannot even find appreciation from someone who might possibly give it some. I don't even care about the bastardization of vampire mythology, I am someone that really knows the mythology quite well, but it still doesn't bother me all that much. Let them have their vampires be as girly as they want, it makes for a great laugh and it doesn't change the mythology outside of the Twilight tweeniverse.


What does bother me most is that some people really do think that Twilight is a great movie. Twilight is flat out insulting to the intelligence of the general public, but not that insulting if they eat it up with a glazed look in their eyes and a smile. Now, if you're a 16-year-old chick/dude with a taste for eyeliner, I have no issue with you liking it. It's made for you. Actually, I have no issue with an adult liking it, so long as they can at least admit that it's not a good film. There is such thing as a guilty pleasure, I have many, and guilty pleasure grants a very free and open pass to like garbage. I, shamefully, love Dawson's Creek. I didn't always love that awful show, in fact, I thought it was completely moronic and talked all sorts of shit about it. Then, thanks to syndication, one late night I got roped in well after the show had gone off the air, and born was a very guilty pleasure and a life choice…Dawson or Pacey.


I could have gone 900 different ways with this review, and there are 900 different things to say about this film, which is funny, because nothing even happens until the last 45 minutes? But Twilight has been torn apart by so many in so many different ways that I need not tread the details. It's way too easy. Though, a caption post would have been great, or even one about the epic Kristen Stewart hospital performance that was recently recreated by Mindy McCready on Celebrity Rehab. Maybe now that I have seen Twilight, I can talk about it and mention how bad it blows, but realistically, I couldn't care less when it comes down to it. In the end, the only things I got out of watching Twilight are the fact that I conquered one of the most infamous films ever made, and that girls really shouldn't shop at Eddie Bauer.

Twilight - Directed by Catherine Hardwicke, starring Robert Pattinson, Kristin Stewart, and Billy Burke - Rated PG-13
For those that know me, you may have heard me claim that I would never watch this movie. Well, as with many similar statements I make regarding certain popular movies, I went back on my word. But this is a vampire movie and I tend to watch every vampire movie that is released. My oath to never read or watch Harry Potter still stands, however.

So I had a bit of a preconception coming into this movie in that I thought the books were tween garbage and a movie studio was cashing in on a craze that will be all but forgotten in less than ten years. After watching Twilight, I think I'm mostly right. The film, about vampires in a high school and the love story that develops between a human, Bella (Stewart), and a vampire, Edward Cullen (Pattinson), appears cheaply made, right down to the pale makeup. I had read and been told that sometimes the makeup is a bit messed up and I did notice that sometimes the neck didn't exactly match the face of a character, and it all looked pretty fake in general. The action isn't handled very well, either. When a vampire does something supernatural, it gets kind of blurry and the speed of the film is slowed down and sped up. It just doesn't look good. This film should have at least had some gret visuals of vampires engaging in fights and flying and whatnot, but it all came out wrong. The location looks great, though. This film could almost double as a tourism ad for the Pacific Northwest. But there was potential to create a real style for this film (and series) and it was missed, probably due to the fact that this film was rushed to come out at the height of the Twilight craze.
I don't really have much to say about the acting because it didn't stick out to me in any way. Everyone was just okay. Though I must say that Peter Facinelli looks plain stupid with blond hair. I would say more about him, and the rest of the Cullen family, but they are not given any character development. It's basically like this film was just meant to show the lineup of returning characters for the sequel. Here's Cullen girl, she hates Bella; here's another Cullen girl, she likes Bella; and the rest of the Cullens, who don't seem to care one way or another about anything except walking around in slow motion with brooding looks on their faces.
The look of the vampires are down (look as in facial gestures) but the lore is a bit much for me. These "vampires" can walk in daylight. Sure, it's cloudy all the time, but it's still daylight! And when they get hit with direct sun? They just shine like they're covered in diamonds. That is not a vampire. If they would call themselves something else, I would be fine with it. They do drink blood and have different powers, but the sunlight issue bothered me.
What can I say, though? I actually want to know what happens next. It's the vampire lover in me, I guess. So I will will watch the next Twilight movie (on DVD), if only to see if they give more information on the characters. I'm a sucker for the history of vampires. I want to know about the Cullens' origin and this film gave a very short explanation for it. So this film, to me, a non-reader, is just sequel bait, but it did slightly work on me.

The Sum of the Wisdom of "Twilight:" Vampires Suck!

If you are one of those misfortunate parents of a teenage girl who put themselves through the torture of watching "Twilight" after finding out what "TL" on their "favorite movies" list on Facebook stood for, anticipating to discover some sinister fascination with evil in your offspring, then you'll know that all the worry, as well as the one and a half hours you spent watching this, were in vain.
 
With about one fifth of the suspense level of an average episode of "Supernatural" and one quarter of the cinematographic charme of "Cop & Copper," if you made it through the first hour of agony, you knew by then you had nothing to fear, if it's evil you're afraid of.
 
Then again, some wise people have said that stupidity is actually a greater enemy of good than downright evil, but we all know that it's way too late to save anyone from that all-powerful enemy.
 
With a mythology and philosophy behind the plot about as tight as "Rapunzel," "Twilight" is about as prone to attract anyone to the occult as the original version of "Nosferatu," and poses about half the threat of Harry Potter in this aspect.
 
The conclusion is just another fairly sad testimony of people's taste in the 21st century.

I rate this film 10/10. I really like the movie and get excited to watch the next series of this movie which entitled New moon. I haven’t read the novel and I don’t want to try to read it because I’d like to watch it more exciting. Unlike other vampire story this is not a horror one and I really love this love story. In which, two lovers are totally different and still fighting for their love no matter what happens.

Basic Premise:

Isabella "Bella" has just uprooted from AZ to move to WA and live with her dad. A new school, new friends, and a new love interest come with the move. However, Edward's attitude towards her runs cool and cold. Just when she thinks they can't get along, everythign changes. Her world is turned upside down and neither of them will be the same.

Review:

First, I have to say that I have not read the books. This movie almost inspired me to read the books. However, my reading schedule is swamped, I barely read because I'm always writing, and Ms. Meyer's incident with the last book in the series means I'll never get to them (don't want to start something I won't be able to finish). Thus I cannot compare the book to the film. I can however critique the movie.

It was slow to start. The acting felt awkward and stilted in the beginning, like the actors were still trying to get a feel for their characters rather than the characters getting a feel for each other within the confines of the story. Also, the secondary characters felt like impediments to the plot, as if their very presence was slowing down the whole story.

Once the getting-to-know-you portion of the movie had ended and all the characters were established, the movie flowed much better and I was able to get into it. Twilightwasn't as angsty as Convenant, thankfully. That the characters were teenagers in high school (most of them) was part of the setting and established the story, it wasn't the entire movie.

I enjoyed Edward's family and can't wait for the next movies so we can see more of them. I also enjoyed that the movie ended. A conflict was introduced and ended in the two-hour time frame. There were loose ends that alluded to the potential plots of the next movies but they were there to set up anticipation.

As I said already, I haven't read the books, I haven't even read the blurbs of the books (I've only seen the covers). Given what was introduced in the movie, I can make an educated guess as to what the future movies hold. It'll be interesting to see if my theories (which I can't spell out here since that would be a spoiler) come true. While, I could read the books (if I had time), I'll just wait.

God can these girls get any more annoying? Every time they see any material related to Twilight they go AAHH OH MY GOD OH MY GOD AHH!

 

I mean calm down. Drop the hypocritical acts man. Honest to God truth? None of us has heard of the Twilight series until the buzz started in the US. If it was really your every ounce of soul, why no one talked about it till now? Face it... You were only doing it cause everyone else was doing it.



So Twilight the movie is about Bella Swan who moves to live with her dad in Washington. And people practically gave her a parade when she got there. I mean guys were kissing her and doing all these stupid stuff to get her attention and all Bella does is go, "Ooh.... no.. I like to be alone." This girl was boring! No wonder vampires wanna hang out with you.



So the school Bella's school has these vampires. And surprisingly, no one saw these pasty white kids with glowing eyes and thought they were vampires. Then one day Bella almost gets hit by a truck and Edward Cullen (AHH AHH OH MY GOD!!!) jumps in and saves her. And from that moment on, things just come to a screeching halt. Most of the scenes later were just montages of the two staring into each others eyes.



Some problems that I had with this movie was that they really pushed in a lot of things that didn't make sense like Edward would be going "Hey Bella, we shouldn't be friends, stay away from me."And then 5 minutes later he comes around and catches and apple for her. And ugh...the cheesy dialogue man.

For instance:

Edward- Say it out loud.

Bella- Vampire

Edward- Are you afraid?

Bella- I'm afraid of losing you

I mean... Whaa?



Another problem I had was that the story didn't really pick up till the very end of the film. The first hour was all about the romance and the director even managed to screw that up. I didn't see no Titanic shit. And quite frankly, there wasn't much chemistry between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.



And because of that, there was little development of the other characters like the bad guys who only get introduced later on. There was little development on the Cullen family which I found much more interesting to watch. Most of the good parts of the show was when the Cullens were together but it was all kinda brief.



My fav would probably be the baseball scene which was really well edited plus the Muse background music. And is it just me or is Alice Cullen's pitching style a turn on?



Alice Cullen was my favorite in the whole movie. There's some Luna Lovegood-ish feeling about her. Plus the actress playing her is just hot!



And honestly, I think she likes Bella more than Edward does actually. Like the time when Bella got bitten by James and was throwing herself all over the floor. Did Edward go to her? Nope Alice did. And she had more balls to resist drinking her blood than him. That stupid motherfucker, I can't believe girls fall for your ass. They should just have a lesbo movie with Alice Cullen and Bella. I'd pay for that.



So watching this movie, I know that the fans were really going to have the same syndrome we Star Wars fans have and like the movie how bad it is. But overall I expected much worse from it and just pray to God the girls won't go gila again when New Moon comes out.

Wuthering Heights makes more sense if you’re a teenage girl. Heathcliff is clearly hot. For starters, he’s filled with inner turmoil. He doesn’t have parents, so there’s no-one to cramp his style. His sudden violent outbursts are mostly directed at less-hot men. And he shares his name with the late Heath Ledger. It’s a crying shame there were no teenagers around when Emily Bronte wrote the book, as you could have saved critics years of wrangling over subtext. Fortunately, Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight was immediately understood by its readership. It’s about a Heathcliff-type named Edward, who struggles with love (and being a vampire).

Replacing the Yorkshire moors with the forests of Washington State,Twilight is the story of Bella Swan; the kind of girl who wears black and underlines a lot of Emily Dickinson. Bella arrives in America’s damp hinterland after her parents divorce. Her father is the chief of police in a little town called Forks. He doesn’t talk much, but Bella likes quiet men. When Bella enrols at the local high-school, she’s instantly drawn to a pale mute with a cool haircut and a tight sweater. As it turns out, this brooding hunk of well-coiffed man-candy is a vampire. He warns Bella: “If you’re smart… you’ll stay away from me.” But since when did talk of being bad prove a turn-off?

Every time Kirsten Stewart looks at Robert Pattinson in this movie, she looks horny. He’ll be droning on about the moral quandary of being a vampire… blahblahblah, and Stewart is making a sex-face. This perks up the story no end. We’re so used to seeing women talk and men wait for sex to happen that it’s startling to be aware that this girl wants Pattinson in the Biblical sense. Stewart (who looks like Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club) has a fiercely honest face. It’s always more plausible to watch her scenes with Pattinson as two virgins skirting the bedroom than one virgin and a hundred-year-old vampire. Bella Swan might want Edward Cullen because he’s a tragic figure, but Stewart wants Pattinson because he’s buff.

If you ever wanted to understand how Heathcliff maintains his appeal in Wuthering Heights when (on the surface) he’s a morally-depraved, dog-murdering lunatic – look at Robert Pattinson. This man could eat a bowlful of pets and still look shag-able. He’s got post-coital hair, eyes for only you… a broad, monogamous chin. He looks like he was born to scale balconies. Though, as an actor, Pattinson is more Judd Nelson than Marlon Brando – since this is a movie told from the girl’s point of view, his acting doesn’t matter. He’s there to be adored, and he looks comfortable with adoration. His lips command kisses.

There is a subplot in Twilight about a group of “bad” vampires running around killing people, but you’re never meant to pay it close attention. The intended viewer – female, 11-16 – is a lot more interested in Bella and Edward’s prom night than they are in watching monsters brawl. Those who complain about the big fight being sidelined are missing the point. In this movie, it’s Kirsten Stewart’s prom dress that merits scrutiny, not the blood spurts. Prom is, of course, worth dying for (for most girls). So it’s no surprise Bella would accept a dance from a killer rather than sit prom out. Twilight’s success is down to focusing on real-life terrors over and above supernatural upsets.

Emily Bronte would have included a prom scene in Wuthering Heights, if she’d known about prom. Anything that a young girl can develop a feverish excitement about is her cup of tea. Look at Heathcliff: Would any sane woman over 30 date this man? He doesn’t appear to wash for most of the book. But that’s because he’s a fantasy. Heathcliff is a man who could only seem romantic to someone who’d never dated a Heathcliff. Like a vampire, he’d kill you in the long run. Stephenie Meyer understands all too well why that’s true – but girls read Wuthering Heights anyway. Twilight is in love with heartache.

Review Eff Twilight: The Movie

For the record, I have not taken part in the blowjob fest that is New Moon. No, I stayed home that weekend and refused to give that movie any of my hard earned dollars.

That being said, I’m really only talking about the first Twilight flick.

And what do I think of said flick?

Fuck Twilight: The Movie.

I went to go see Twilight in the theatre opening weekend for one reason and one reason only. I knew that the movie could not, entirely, be told from Bella’s point of view. We weren’t going to be the camera. That being said, we wouldn’t get “knocked out” at the climax of the flick.

Translation: I wanted to see all the shit I couldn’t fucking “see” in the book.

Instead of cool Vampire fight scenes a la Blade, I got something much much more.

THE WORST ACTING EVER FUCKING PRESENTED IN A MOTION PICTURE!

It’s bad.

Way bad.

I mean way way bad.

I know, I know....you want an example. Got one right here.

The scene in question involves the first time Eddie the Vamp meets Bella the tween.

For you cave dwellers, here’s the setup. Bella’s blood smells SOOO good to Edward (right, “blood”) that it temps him to break his long time vow to not taste human blood.

Now, in the book the first time Edward smells Bella is played very subtly. He takes a whiff, tries to hide his “disgust” and then rushes out of the room before he snaps.

In the movie though, when Edward takes a whiff, subtly is NOT on the table. In fact, what happens is absolutely amazing and worth watching and re-watching over and over.

Ole’ Paterson gives the look of a lifetime. A look that says, “Oh my God! Someone just SHIT on my fucking face!” But it doesn’t stop there.

It continues. Like someone continuously is shitting on his face.

Here’s the thing: A director directed him. An Assistant Director stood there and watched. The boom guy stood and watched. The Camera crew stood by and shot it. That’s just the top brass. It doesn’t include the producers and editors who looked at the footage.

Out of all of those people, NO ONE stopped and said...“really? That’s how you’re going to play it? Like someone just shat on your face?”

The Director didn’t pull him aside and say, “Great performance. You’re doing good. But, um, just a little feedback. Uh, right now, what you’re doing...well, it looks like you’re reacting to someone shitting on your face. Whattia say we dial it back a notch and try it again?”

And this isn’t the only example in the flick. There are so many that you can turn it into a drinking game to bad acting. You’ll pass out before
Bella gets knocked out, thus missing the shit you watched the movie to see in the first place.

It’s for its horrible acting, that I say:

Fuck Twilight: The Movie.

TWILIGHT (2008)

BOTTOM LINE: A unique take on the age-old vampire story that could have been quite thrilling and dramatic if it were not for the incessant music video style sequences and an unwillingness by the filmmakers to expand the tone of the film beyond its core teenage audience.

THE GOOD: Twilight deserves kudos for creating a unique take on the vampire story, which has been so well covered throughout both cinematic and literary history. It can thank its source material in the novel by Stephenie Meyer who manages to create a world and logic that works extremely well and allows for this highly improbable union between a teenage girl and a vampire who looks 17 but is in fact much much older. The chemistry between the leads Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, who play Bella and Edward, makes the whole thing work; they infuse their characters with a likeability and vulnerability that is endearing, especially in the case of Edward who has to fight every urge in his body to perform his natural instinct of sucking the blood out of Bella. However unlikely it is to appear in a teenage romance, the theme of choosing to overcome your instincts and natural persona to become something more is at the heart of this film, with Edward and his family choosing not to feast on the blood of humans, making them benign vampires. “We're like vegetarians”, Edward says at one point. Another unexpected plus is the use of humour. There are quite a number of moments that will have you smiling, with one stand out being Bella's father loading his shot gun when Bella arrives home with Edward. Overall, this is a film that is unique and worth checking out for that reason.

THE BAD: The main issue with this film is its style; given the core audience for this film is teenage in nature the filmmakers have decided to make, in effect, a two hour music video. Additionally, the darkness associated with any vampire story is toned down significantly in order to hit that same audience. As a result, the film has no dramatic or thrilling moments, relying solely on the chemistry between Bella and Edward to carry it through. The climatic fight scenes between the good and bad vampires are shoddily done, lacking any real thrills. You know the good guys will win so its just an exercise of going through the motions. You get the hint of a big backstory of how the vampires came to settle in the area and their stand off with the wolves, but this is never really brought to the forefront (I guess that's what the sequel will be for!). With such great potential in the story, Twilight could have been something special, but unfortunately, only teenage girls will be able to get any value out of the final product.

I think it’s safe to say that I came a little late into this whole Twilight business. I was abroad in Germany for a year, and when I return home, everyone is obsessed about the Jonas Brothers (who the fuck are they?), Miley Cyrus (she’ll be famous for a year or two), and this thing called Twilight. All of the sudden, I am hearing about Twilight everywhere. Then I went to school and heard all about Edward and Bella from just about every girl and then even my mother got hooked on it. So, after what seemed like hours of hearing about this freakin’ franchise, I decided to read the book, which I read half of. The movie was just around the corner, and I decided, “why read when I can see it in a week?” I know, I’m lazy.

The movie was pretty entertaining, I have to say. I went into the film not as a huge fan and not as a hater, and left the same way. I think the filmmakers did a pretty good job of condensing the story, without leaving out anything important. Sure, the fangirls might have disappointed, but I thought it hit pretty much every beat. Some things were a little exaggerated, like when Edward first sees Bella in the biology class, but that’s alright. Charlie wasn’t really how I imagined him, but that’s ok. Actually, I liked the character of Charlie a lot more in the film than in the novel. In the book, he’s just a fool who is confused and eats dinner, but in the film, he’s rather caring, and that was a nice change.

  The film did a good job of making sure we loved Edward, and hated Jacob, and especially that asshole James. My god, I hated that guy. Haha.
Oh well, this review kind of sucks, but oh well, it was good, I enjoyed it. Go see it, don’t see it, I don’t care. But I dug.

I would like to say that when I saw this movie for the first time I was bored to tears, it really had me wondering what the hell made the books and this movie so popular. I am still confused about what makes its fan base so huge that it is sickening to watch videos on YouTube of New Moons opening night.

I never really have any desire to watch these movies, but my girlfriend wanted to watch this movie again, so I sat down with her and hoped that after seeing New Moon that it would make Twilight just a little bit better. Holy crap was I wrong. Even with how boring both movies are, it turns out that after watching New Moon, Twilight is sooo bad it’s not even funny. The only thing that can make Twilight any better is the RiffTrax version. Seriously that is the only way I was able to tolerate my way through this one again.

I dread the day that my girlfriend wants to have marathon with these movies.

Anyone enough bitching about how bad the movie is, let’s move on to complaining on how bad it is.

I actually found myself doing other things than wanting to watch the film, that’s always a bad thing, at one point I found that I was behind my computer surfing the net totally not paying attention. I had no idea I was doing it till I wondered where that strange noise was coming from. Turns out I was mentally blocking the movie and not even noticing it. Not a good sign.

Now I am a native of Seattle, so the only thing that really caught my attention was the scenery and the desire to go on a hike. Really that was the only thing that kept me watching the first time through, and it helps… a lot. But even with the gorgeous Pacific Northwest scenery I still found the storyline dragging on, boring, dull, less exciting then being on a carousel at the age of 50, and you’re not with a child.

There are a million reasons on why to avoid this film, but for those of us with girlfriends, we are doomed for the rest of our lives. Here’s to hoping that the 3rd movie will have some sort of plot.

Twilight

I went into this film expecting to totally loathe and despise it, but when all was said and done and the final credits rolled, I actually found myself liking it.
The character Edward Cullen was masterfully portrayed by Robert Pattinson. Many will remember him as Cedric Digory from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire . His acting skills have improved greatly since then.
Kristen Stewart seems to be the perfect choice for Bella. I haven’t read the books, but from the description she was given, it appears that fits the bill dead on.
This is the only film, that I know of, that has vampires and isn’t classified in the horror genre. Honestly, there’s nothing vampiric about this, short of some brief mentions of bloodsucking. I mean, these guy can actually go out in the sun..even if they do end up glittering like a drag queen show.
The filmmakers obviously knew who they were making this film for. Tween girls are the ones who seem to be the main driving force behind this franchise. I’ve heard it compared to the Harry Potter films, but I don’t understand it. They are so different, its not even funny. The only connecting tissue is Robert Pattinson.
Special effects in this film could be better. It seemed as if they spent all the money on Edward (and others) super speed and various other powers that when it came time to show the glitter, they took a page out of the Sci-Fi channel handbook and went homemade with it.
Having never read the book, I can’t say whether this was true to the source material or not, but I can sya that it was very well done. I was highly impressed with the quality of this film. Did I love it? No, but I would voluntarily watch it again, and that is a sign of a good film.
