(as usual, no spoilers) First I'd like to say I'm getting sick of the movies that don't end. I know GC is part of a trilogy (or whatever) but that's no excuse not to end the stupid movie. I think the best part about that movie was the bears. They could talk (small joys, okay. leave me alone.) Is it just me or are there way too many child actresses out there with the name Dakota (yes, two is one too many)? It doesn't help that they look alike. Okay. What did I think of the movie? I'm not sure. That's the truth. Normally movies like this make me want to read the books they originated from. Not so with this one. Except for the parts with the bears and the talking animals (I like how the daemons and humans interact), the whole thing left me a little indifferent. I think if it had ended or if I was able to watch the whole thing in one long run, I'd have an opinion. Actually, that's not all together true since LoTR and Pirates didn't end but I loved all the installments. Though the...

Philip Pullman is not a great writer. He is a good children’s writer, granted. His Dark Materials is two thirds of a good trilogy for children. But, like J.K. Rowling, Dan Brown and the rest, he is only great if you haven’t read many books. His Dark Materials may deal with astrophysics, metaphysics, atheism and Paradise Lost, but that does not automatically make it worth reading. The same goes for the first big-screen adaptation of one of Pullman’s books. The Golden Compassmight be smarter than Harry Potter, but that doesn’t make it The Unbearable Lightness of Being for ’tweens. It’s Narnia for atheists, no matter what Pullman says.
