Buried Alive

Everything in Buried Alive is completely exaggerated. Suspension of disbelief MUST be used while watching the film, there are no ifs, ands, or buts about it. If you can get past the fact that what you're seeing couldn't possibly exist in any world we've ever know (and not even the supernatural parts), you might have a fun time watching this movie.

The plot centers around 6 college students who go to this house up by a gold mine, which was originally owned by their ancestors. Two are cousins, two are potentially sorority sisters being initiated into the girl cousin's sorority, and the girl cousin's boyfriend and the boy cousin's geek friend accompany them. The girl cousin, Renee, wants to scare the potential sorority sisters and have her fun doing what she wants to them. The boy cousin is motivated by potentially finding the gold that is supposedly up at the house or the mine. But the cousins' ancestor buried alive his wife, since she couldn't be killed because she had an Indian protection necklace, and then took it and the necklace has been passed down for generations. And the last generation of man is no other than the boy cousin, Zane, so the buried alive Indian woman comes back for revenge. The story is pretty hard to follow and confusing, mostly because the movie doesn't stick to the plot at hand that much. The spiritual story infused would have been pretty entertaining if it had been used to its full potential.

First off, the actors are either intentionally exaggerating the college attitude or they're just bad at acting. I think it was the former, because everything they do is just so ridiculous. The sorority initiation takes up the majority of the movie! Obviously, there's going to be some stupid scenes where the girls take off their clothes just for the sake of nudity. The females in the movie are pretty much the stereotypical idiots, and the guys act the same way. There's so much hornyness and partying in the movie that even real college students would tell you that they're not like that.

Most of the kills happen off-screen, and the gore that we do see is pretty fake. I don't think it will gross anyone out, because you can tell that it's just makeup/special effects. The suspense is killed because the movie runs so slowly. Kills happen few and far between, which makes us forget about the killer! There are too many sidetracks away from the spooky stuff to take care of the nudity, and in the end when there are pop-up scares, they don't creep you out because the suspense has worn off.

The movie has an abrupt (and I mean ABRUPT) ending, and you might miss all of what happens because it really doesn't conclude well. The movie is entertaining for a little bit, but the pacing is off and you might not feel sucked in because everything feels so fake.

Also, what's with the creepy cousin love relationship?! That's just weird, and it doesn't pan out at all. Nothing gets mentioned about it. And nothing gets mentioned about the part where Zane drowns Renee in the tub in her dream. It's like it was in there for no reason. Also, everyone is a bit too touchy-feely. I'm pretty sure my girlfriend would NOT be alright with my fondling another girl's butt.

With all of the other slasher/ghost demon movies that have come out, this one just gets buried alive.
