Sin Nombre

Sin Nombre - Written and directed by Cary Fukunaga, starring Édgar Flores, Paulina Gaitan, and Tenoch Huerta - Rated R Chigurh was enthralled by the gang aspect of this film. Sin Nombre ("Without a Name") is an interesting, powerful, and occasionally brutal film about gangs in Central America (and Mexico) and the journey illegal immigrants undertake to make it to the United States. But it's not just about those two things because if it was then it would be better suited as a documentary. It's also about how love can make even a hardened gang member grow a conscience and how even though the masses of people outside of America trying to make it in may just be a number to most, they each have their own story and reason for making such a risky trek. Maybe that second part sounds a bit too pretentious and political or liberal or whatever, but the gang member aspect interested me immensely. Now, I'm not one of those people that idolizes gangs and thirsts for...

Sin Nombre

Drama/Suspense, 2008 (Rated R) Starring: Paulina Gaitan, Edgar Flores A young girl sets out on a journey with a father she is just now meeting and her Uncle to cross the border into the United States all the way from Honduras. This is expected to be a 3 week journey!! Along the way she crosses paths and finds an unexpected friend in a recent ex gang member who is on the run from the violent gang after crossing the leader of the entire gang. I find myself rooting for this gang member to cross to the US and maybe have a fresh start even though I know that as a gang member he's done terrible things. Gaitan is an amazing actress. I saw her in another really good movie called Trade . This is all in Spanish subtitled in English. Be aware that the subtitles are kind of small. It's amazing the lengths that people resort to in order to get to the US. Really great and moving story. Well executed. 4 Stars

Sin Nombre

The amazing film called Sin Nombre! You know.. I thought this movie would have had a much much bigger impact if Cidade de Deus hadn't come out. It's like there is no other movie about crime gangs can surprise me anymore after Cidade. Still doesn't change the fact that Sin Nombre is oh-so-totally-awesome! Sin Nombre centres around Sayra and her Honduran family as they try to cross the border into America and a chance encounter with Willy, a former hoodlum being pursued by his old gang. Sayra found her chance of freedom through Willy as Willy finds redemption in helping Sayra try to cross into the U.S. Sin Nombre was made for approx. $500,000. That's not much money for a film. But the director made Sin Nombre looked like a $10,000,000 movie. The cinematography of the Sin Nombre's gritty Mexican setting is just epicness and the trainride sequences are just stunning. Paulina Gaitan who plays Sayra isn't that good. Hahaha. I felt she was incredibly stiff and...

Sin Nombre

'Sin Nombre" marks the emergence of a talented writer and director in Cary Fukunaga even though his material has been done before. This movie reminded me of "Boyz n' the Hood" and "Menace II Society" without their power. I don't know why I didn't love this movie but I was fascinated by it and I felt for all the characters. It is a violent and suspenseful journey that the lead characters go on as they try to elude the Border Patrol and dodge bullets as they try to cross the border. The movie deals with gangs, children becoming killers, growing up and trying to better yourself. I was interested all through out and the young first time actors are very impressive. It makes you feel like you are watching real people in real life and that is what a movie with unknown actors can do very well. This is well written and directed and I hope Fukunaga gets a chance to make another movie because I have a feeling his next one will be a powerhouse.
