Film Review: LAW ABIDING CITIZEN (2009)

RATING 7/10 BOTTOM LINE: “Law Abiding Citizen” is a solid thriller that will grip you until its conclusion, but the chief villain is more sympathetic than the hero, which makes the hunt to stop the villain and the obligatory ending far from satisfying. THE GOOD: Director F. Gary Gray has delivered some solid thrillers in the past, and he does so again with “Law Abiding Citizen”, largely thanks to the solid performances he engenders out of Gerard Butler and Jaime Foxx, and the dramatic underpinning of each sequence and the narrative as a whole. Gerard Butler plays Clyde Shelton, a man who watches his family be brutally murdered in front of him, and then later sees the prosecutor Nick Rice (Jaime Foxx) strike a plea bargain to ensure at least one of the perpetrators gets the death penalty, while the other, and more guilty party, only gets five years in prison. This starting point in the story is imminently relatable, and immediately puts you on...

Law Abiding Citizen

I was really hyped over this, partly because there's Gerard Butler in a badass role, partly because it was written by Kurt Wimmer and lastly because of the really great trailer. Oh, and there's also the Oscar winner Jamie Foxx but until he singlehandedly defeats a bunch of Persians or saves the world I won't take him seriously. Clyde Shelton (Butler) plans on having a nice dinner with his wife and daughter when someone knocks on the door. Two burglars, Ames and Darby barge in, knock Clyde out with a baseball bat. While Ames is looting around, Darby stabs Clyde's wife. And then rapes her. And finally goes for his little daughter. Clyde's lawyer Rice (Foxx) makes a deal with Darby - he snitches on Ames who gets death penalty, and Darby walks free. Clyde finally snaps and goes after his own justice. Now it's time to take the corrupt system down, one lawyer and judge at a time. The resemblances to the Punisher are numerous, as you can see. But the Punisher is a simple guy. Give him...

Law Abiding Citizen

Law Abiding Citizen - Directed by F. Gary Gray, starring Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx, and Bruce McGill - Rated R Kind of ridiculous and implausible, but hey, so is the Evil Kurgan, and he's pretty entertaining. Law Abiding Citizen is a fun movie. Is it stupid? You bet. Is it completely implausible? Oh yeah. Does Gerard Butler lapse back to his Scottish accent at times? Yup. But is it also awesome? It certainly is. This movie has enough great moments to make me forget that most of it makes no sense. The story is straightforward enough, it just gets more and more ridiculous as time goes on. It all starts when Clyde Shelton (Butler) answers the door at home one night. Two robbers burst in and eventually kill his wife and daughter. Enter Nick Rice (Foxx), an up and coming prosecutor. He decides to give one of the robbers a plea bargain while the other one gets the death penalty. This doesn't sit well with Clyde, so he bides his time (he waits ten years to be exact) and...

FILM REVIEW : Law Abiding Citizen (2009)

Law Abiding Citizen was one of those films that I knew wasn't gonna be that good. I will admit that I went to go see this film only for Razzie voting purposes. I'm not sure that it will make my Razzie ballot, but I did not enjoy it very much. Law Abiding Citizen follows Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler), an inventor. During an invasion of his home, his wife and daughter are murdered by two men. After this incident, he finds out that only one of them will be convicted because his lawyer Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) has cut a deal. Ten years later, Shelton starts to exact revenge upon both of the killers and the justice system itself. Okay: the things I liked. Without giving anything away, the way in which Shelton murders individuals is pretty interesting. Even though the character of Shelton wasn't a very strong one, I think Gerard Butler did the best he could with it. I still don't understand why people think that he was miscast. Also, Regina Hall as Rice's wife was pleasantly surprising...

Law Abiding Citizen - **

Starring:   Jamie Foxx, Gerard Butler Review:   Law Abiding Citizen provides a decent level of entertainment value, but ultimately falls short of being a really good movie.  The movie centers around Gerard Butler's character, who is never given much back story in the beginning, who is forced to watch his wife and child murdered right in front of his eyes. Jamie Foxx is the prosecutor assigned to the case against the men that killed Butler's family.  During the trial process Foxx tells Butler that the best case scenario is to try to plea bargain, giving the death penalty to one of criminals, and a lesser sentence to the other who has agreed to testify against him.  Butler is vehemently against this as he wants to go to trial to ensure both criminals get the penalty they deserve.  Jamie Foxx explains that if they go to trial there is a possibility they both walk but this way they both at least get punished.  Butler is not happy with this...

Law Abiding Citizen

Starring: Jamie Foxx, Gerard Butler, Leslie Bibb Rated R, 2009 A man looses his entire family in a senseless act of crime and over time he plots an elaborate diabolical plan to avenge their death. He really has nothing to loose and pursues those who played a part in the crime and subsequent legal trial that did not do his family justice. With cutting edge maneuvers and surprise attacks he lauches his plan that has everyone confused and searching for answers. I have loved Gerard Butler ever since 300. He did the tough guy gladiator thing, a romantic comedy ( The Ugly Truth ) and now he is taking on the role of law abiding citizen gone deranged killer. He does them all well. This movie was very good. It kept me guessing. It was a bit long but I didn't notice because the movie action just kept coming. Jamie Foxx is awesome as usual. He is funny as ever but takes on this role of hot shot city attorney and plays it to perfection. I have to say that I loved that the mayor was this...

Law Abiding Citizen: Movie Review

How many times have we heard people complain about how the justice system is flawed time and time again? Countless! "Law Abiding Citizen" tackles this same issue but now, instead of doing nothing, one person decides t0 seek revenge and put matters in his own hands. This film, we believe, strives to tackle issues on the American justice system while packaging it into an action-packed thriller. Can "Law Abiding Citizen" deliver in this light? Well, read on to find out our final rating. Clyde Shelton's (Gerard Butler) wife and daughter are raped and murdered in front of him. Due to a loophole in the DNA sample gathered during the investigation, Clyde's lawyer, Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), informs him that they should convict only one of the burglars and let the other one go because he will testify against his partner. If they don't pursue a plea bargain, they might lose the case. Unknown to Nick, the one testifying is actually the one who raped and killed Clyde's family. Ten years...

well, gerard butler looks pretty awesome with his shirt off.  and i’m really starting to miss the in living color jamie foxx days.  dude is just way too serious. other than that, i really can’t say a lot about this film.  other than people seem to like it.  the friend i was with when i saw it really liked it as well.  i think i’m just an uber critic. i think their objective in this film, other than blowing a bunch of stuff up, was to point out some flaws with our legal system.  like making deals with murderers and bad guys and giving them lesser sentences so they can give another bad guy and murderer a harsher sentence.  and i know this goes on.  i’ve seen it in other movies. ol’ gerard loses his mind when the murderer of his wife and daughter get off with a light sentence because the guy testifies against another bad guy.  and he really does kill everybody. it’s one of those deals where they set him...

Well...this movie was very violent and bloody. All the blood does not add to the movie. I know...crazy thought. Gerard Bulter plays Clyde Shelton. His wife and daughter were brutally killed in front of him. Ten years pass, one of the murderers is set free, and Clyde goes insane and is determined to kill the man who killed his family and go after anyone else involved in setting the murderer free. It's no big surprise where this is going to lead...let's just say the movie earned its R rating. Gerard Bulter and Jamie Foxx are far better actors than this movie shows. The plot was good, the execution not so much. The movie was okay, just too simple and nothing made the movie especially interesting to watch. I'm glad I didn't see it in theaters...definitely not worth 8 bucks...but I did get my dollar's worth out of my rental. Of course I did almost fall asleep toward the end, but in my defense it was getting late.

Law Abiding Citizen

Upright Citizen's Tirade Law Abiding Citizen is better than I thought it would be and didn't end the way I thought it would. That doesn't mean it wasn't dumb. It was. The movie opens ten years ago. Gerard Butler plays Clyde Shelton, a wealthy inventor who lives an idyllic life with his wife and daughter until the day two thieves stage a home invasion that results in the rapes and murders of both his wife and his daughter who looks to be about six. Prosecutor Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) accepts a plea bargain from the guy who actually committed the really sick crimes so that the one who just wanted to rob the place and leave would go to death row. This drives Clyde Shelton insane. Ten years later, it's execution day for the one who committed society's greatest offense, failure to plea bargain. Things don't quite go according to plan though. Instead of being sedated during his lethal injection, the chemicals get mixed up and he ends up being awake throughout the entire induced heart...

I love theaters, so, I'll often go to see movies that I wouldn't normally rent or bother with on cable.  In the past, I have been pleasantly surprised.  Other times, well, I got out and I went to a theater and all knowledge is good, even if that knowledge is just how badly a film sucked.  (Hey, I could have went with, " Eternal vigilance is the price of integrity ," but then I'd have to go see stuff like " Twilight " just so I could dog it in the review, and I'm just not willing to pay that price.)  That's why I went to see " Law Abiding Citizen ."  It looked like it might have potential.  It seemed like it might be worth taking a chance on.  I needed to get out and go somewhere or I was going to go crazy.  Luckily, " Law Abiding Citizen " was not really a bad movie.  Sadly, it wasn't a very good movie either.  It had potential, and it simply failed to live up to it.    Starring Gerard Butler as Clyde Shelton, a man...

Movie Review: Law Abiding Citizen (2009)

Law Abiding Citizen (the film not the citizen) is one of those films that could be enjoyable if in the right frame of mind.  Don't think about the plot holes or the political slant.  Forget the self-righteousness and accept it for what it is - an above-average thriller with big-name actors and a few solid moments, but at the end of the day, a pretty forgettable affair. Unfortunately, I don't think I was in the right frame of mind.  To me, Law Abiding Citizen came off like a film that believed it was much better than it actually was.  With a few tweaks and in the right hands, I think it could have been pretty special. It's hard to describe this movie without giving away the plot.  Oscar winner Jamie Foxx plays prosecutor Nick Rice, and Gerard Butler plays engineer Clyde Shelton.  Law Abiding Citizen is part revenge-movie, part battle-of-wits.  There's definitely a bit of Saw in there as well.  It feels like the type of film you've...

Law Abiding Citizen

http://tomclift.blogspot.com Genre: Action, Thriller Director: F. Gary Gray Starring: Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx, Colm Meany, Bruce McGill, Leslie Bibb, Viola Davis Running Time: 109 minutes (plus trailers) “I'm gonna bring the whole fuckin' diseased, corrupt temple down on your head. It's gonna be biblical.” Law Abiding Citizen, the newest film from F. Gary Gray, director of The Italian Job and a few other movies I haven’t seen, is an action revenge thriller that can be summed up nicely by a short exchange between its two lead characters – Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler), a mastermind CIA operate who’s family is murdered by petty criminals, and Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), the career oriented ADA who makes a deal with the killers in order to maintain his high conviction rate. The exchange goes a little something like this: Shelton: “You're the one who makes deals with murders yeah? Well I've come to make mine. Release me.” Rice: “Or...
