Fight Club (David Fincher, 1999)

Some say this is David Fincher's best work, others proclaimed it as a masterpiece. However much I want to say it's good, I beg to differ. There are two possibilities - either those people are deceived, or I lost my film appreciation talents completely (and suddenly). It doesn't quite meet my towering standards that I expect from a film that's 'well-received'. The only aspect that I envisage is Fincher's visual directional style (reminiscent of Panic Room, and Alien 3), which is plentiful here.

Brad Pitt and Edward Norton give surprisingly drab performances akin to part-time amateur actors. Violence shown here is more of quantity than quality. Fight Club has a 'messy feeling' to it, and I don't see that as deliberate. What made this film such a hit is probably the twist at the end (something like The Sixth Sense, but done in such an uninteresting manner that doesn't warrant a second viewing). Compared to other Hollywood misfits in recent years, Fight Club is still watchable. But it pales in comparison with films such as The Usual Suspects.
