DoghouseMe being a fan of Dick Masterson and his philosophy, it was only natural I took a special interest in this particular flick.
Vince is just going through a divorce and his mates – Neil, Mikey, Graham, Matt, Patrick, Gavin and Banksy - decide to give him a man-only weekend. They decide to go to Mikey’s granny’s house, in a small village of Moodley, located right in the middle of nowhere. There, they were planning to get drunk and… get laid. Of course, they don’t know a biological virus has been released that turned all women into an army of pissed off, man-hating, feminist cannibals.
“Doghouse” is a British black comedy horror. It’s just that the comedy is not really what I was expecting. The jokes, while being mostly good and pretty smart, are far too scarce and simply don’t provide enough laughs. Instead, the film turns almost too serious at some point and strictly looking from a horror’s point of view it’s just an average zombie slasher. The idea of the battle of sexes and such, well I just expected it to be on a larger, more explosive scale. They should’ve made it a bit more… I don’t know – wacky, perhaps? I would’ve personally liked to see something like the exploitation flicks, rather than a serious film that is “Doghouse”.
Nevertheless, I had fun with it. And I was gonna end my review this way... BUT!!! Before posting it I read some reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, that totally changed my view of "Doghouse" for the better. So what do the esteemed critics say:
An amateurish, unfunny and unscary British horror-comedy that could be accused of misogyny. - RT Consensus
Female zombies are the perfect excuse to show women being beaten up by men. In its trashy way, the film has just enough exuberance to be classified as harmless. - Edward Porter, Sunday Times UK
A grotesque misogynistic romp, Doghouse is too laddish and corny to even hold a candle to the witty Shaun Of The Dead. - Allan Hunter, Daily Express
Like going on a stag-do with people you hate, this beta-male bilge is far too Neanderthal to do much more than drag its knuckles on the ground and sniff the rears of other, better films. - Matt Glasby, Channel 4 Film
If you're the sort of baby-brained, lads mag-buying moron who thinks Shaun of the Dead could have been improved with the addition of gleeful misogyny, terrible jokes and Danny Dyer, then Doghouse is the film for you. - Alistair Harkness, Scotsman
And do you notice something? Yes, all of the reviewers accusing "Doghouse" of misogyny are actually MALE. While all of the female reviewers gave it a Fresh rating. Just like all the ones screaming "RACISM!!!" all the time are mostly white. Funny how this "political correctness" works, isn't it?
Well fuck them. All of the manginas can just shut the fuck up and go knit, read Cosmo or attend feminist protests because the message "Doghouse" brings is right on spot - ballsy and manly:
“We try to do everything by the book - and we get shafted. We try to be what they want us to be. You know, we become reliable, mature, domesticated. And then what happens? They get bored - that's what happens. If all women really want is pet, why don't they buy a fucking Labrador? I've had enough, being told to sit, and lie down, and roll over, and play dead. From now on, what you see is what you get.” - Vince
And for that only, Pure Genius. Fucking A(MEN)!
