She's Out Of My League

Kirk (Baruchel) is an out of shape, socially awkward, self proclaimed 5 who meets a hard 10 at the airport where he works security with 3 of his friends.  Molly (Eve) takes an interest in him and to the surprise of Kirk and well...everybody she asks him out and they start dating.  This turn of events is too good to be true for Kirk.  No one expects it to last and he can hardly believe his good fortune at managing to date such a beautiful perfect woman.  Will his own self doubt and low self esteem sabotage the entire relationship or is it possible for a 5 to cover the spread and live happily ever after with a 10?

• This movie was hilarious from start to finish.  Kirk and his 3 buddies particularly Stainer are absolutely spot on funny throughout.
• I think it was a really great concept to explore this whole idea of beauty being only skin deep and that if you like someone you like them whether or not society believes it makes sense.

Just Me

She's Out Of My League

Ever since the runaway success of American Pie, the gross-out comedy has been in resurgence. From the unforced hilarity of Superbad and The Hangover to the unwanted attentions of Sex Drive, crude is in, subtle is out.

She's Out Of My League doesn't quite match up to the bar set by  the best of the above, although it doesn't quite plumb the depths  either. Its less-than-highbrow concept is peppered with laughs and  uncomfortable gross-out moments, but it's a very dour viewer who won't  be moved to laughter before the end. If they'd managed to sustain the  laughs for its full 104 minutes then it might even have achieved  greatness.

As it is, there are plenty of missed targets and flat deliveries mixed in with the comic gold. It's not quite Superbad, but at least it manages to be Superaverage.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about She's Out Of My League is its cast of relative unknowns. Tropic Thunder's  Jay Baruchel is at least recognizable in the lead role, but beyond his  star turn there are very few familiar faces - so much so that the brief  appearance of British TV star Trevor Eve almost feels like a celebrity  cameo. It should come with a warning that No Known Actors Were Harmed  During The Shooting Of This Movie.

Given the lack of experience in front of the camera (and behind it -  this is director Jim Field Smith's Hollywood debut), they manage to do  remarkable work with a largely derivative and predictable script. Kirk  Kettner (Baruchel) is a deadbeat no-hoper working security at Pittsburgh  airport. His saving grace is that he's marginally less socially inept  than his slacker buddies, but he's clearly not a great catch in  anybody's book.

It comes as a shock to both Kirk and his friends, then, when he attracts  the attentions of professional event planner Molly (real-life daughter  of Trevor Eve, Alice). No one is more confused than Kirk when Molly  seems intent on becoming a couple, and he has to rethink his entire  dating strategy in a desperate attempt to keep her affections.

Naturally, this leads to plenty of gross and wacky situations, including  Kirk ejaculating in his pants mere seconds before meeting her parents,  and a truly hilarious ball-shaving incident. Nobody said this movie was  subtle.

Where She's Out Of My League wins through is in its good-natured  matey aura, however, and Baruchel, T.J. Miller, Nate Torrence and Mike  Vogel create some winning chemistry as the hapless buddies. Baruchel is  endearingly clueless as the out-of-his-depth Kirk too, and you'll be  surprised to find yourself rooting for him come the third act. He may be  an idiot, but you wouldn't mind counting him among your friends.

As for She's Out Of My League, it's far too inconsistent to  entirely win us over, even if it boasts a handful of truly hilarious  scenes. For a starless debutant, though, it punches well above its  weight.

She's Out Of My League

Well wouldn't you know? The movie was pretty awesome! It was pretty funny--hilarious in some parts--and it had a bit of a message, and it was sweet.  A good, solid comedy, in the veins of "I Love You, Man" even though the subject matters are different but they shared the same tone? feeling?

At first I had a bit of an issue with the female lead-Alice Eve who plays Molly-only because she looks a lot like Reese Witherspoon and that was distracting at the beginning. Jay Baruchel does self-deprecating very well here and he's all around likeable, which helps and sells the movie.  All the supporting players were solid; the story was simple and it was kept simple which was also good; not for once the movie felt like it was trying too hard to be funny, everything was allowed to look like natural, everyday wtf? moments you have to roll with.
In short: it deals with Kirk (Jay Baruchel) who's trying to get his old (bitchy) girlfriend back, and ends up meeting this other superhot girl at his job, and after helping her out, she ends up asking him out. Hilarity ensues. She's gorgeous, he's not and everyone around them keep telling them is not mean to be and cracking jokes about it. Will it last? even with the 5 points difference in the hotness scale?
I thought the movie was perfect just as it is, it doesn't have any real marquee names attached to it, but I think this is a comedy that deserves to find an audience, maybe on dvd. Grade: B

FILM REVIEW : She's Out of My League (2010)

While certainly enjoyable and fine in and of itself, She's Out of My League definitely misses the mark that it is so desperately trying to hit.


Jay Baruchel plays Kirk, an average guy who works at an airport. He lives at home with his parents and... his ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend. He meets a very attractive girl named Molly (Alice Eve) at the airport where he works. Wouldn't you know it? She leaves her cellphone at the airport before boarding the plane. From his returning of the cellphone the two begin a unique relationship that is centered around how "good enough" people are for each other.

The relatively unknown actors in the ensemble cast are spot on. Jay Baruchel and Alice Eve are both perfect for their parts. There isn't much for either to do in terms of actual "acting" per se, but Baruchel is the perfect "average guy," and Eve is the right fit for the "perfect 10."

There are a pretty good amount of laughs to be had in She's Out of My League, but it should be noted that this is no revolutionary film or even an hilarious one. It's fine, but it's nothing new either. The crude and/or "nothing goes right for this guy" humor, the cutesy moments, and the predictable sequence events that we have come to know (and, for some I guess, love) in our movie-going escapades are all here. In other words, it tries too hard to be this generation's There's Something About Mary. That is probably my biggest complaint about this movie. I liked Mary alright, but I didn't love it like most people. However, I won't pretend that it didn't have a heavy influence in the way that future comedies were written. This movie feels like something of a exact rewrite and consequently comes off as slightly uninspired.

Again, it's nothing special, but She's Out of My League works for what it is: a lighthearted romantic-comedy that can appeal to just about anyone.

Review: I will start by saying I have a soft spot for the "lovable loser gets extraordinarily hot chick" genre.  Occasionally one comes along with some originality and breaks the mold.  This one had that potential, instead of just hinting at the fact that the girl was "out of his league" the movie goes ahead and puts it out there and uses it as a plot device. 

This movie is about a lowly airport TSA employee that doesn't have much luck with women.  This is probably due to his three friends (who also work at the airport) that give him horrible advice, that he takes, even though none of them have any steady relationships.  This is of course, except for the one who is married who never gives advice and the advice is never taken even if it is given. 

One day at work, our main character Kirk finds the cell phone of a gorgeous woman.  Once she finds out that he has it, she asks him to hold on to it and return it to her.  Upon returning to this ridiculously hot woman, Molly, she asks him out.

This is where the story gets predictable.  Kirk continues to lead his dorky lifestyle and yet, Molly endears herself more and more to him.  Hijniks ensue and their relationship takes shape.  The whole time we are left wondering why this is the case.  Molly is a great girl who is nice, successful and gorgeous.  Kirk is a great guy but is not that attractive or successful and is a big dork.  Now this is ideally the way it should work right?  Two nice people who like each other get together, but that isn't the way the world works and these characters know it.

Part of the charm of the movie is how the characters embrace the storyline and make the movie all about the superficial differences that separate people.  However, that's where any sort of philosophy ends with this movie.  The rest if filled with predictable gags and jokes.  The actress that plays Molly is very attractive but only a subpar actress.  The main character plays the lovable loser role but ham's it up just a wee bit too much.  Finally, the friends are all caricatures and it isn't really clear why they are all friends besides the fact that somebody thought it would make a funny movie.  The movie takes a familiar premise, puts a somewhat unique take on it and then stops there and goes back to formula.  The movie was entertaining with a few laughs but there are funnier movies you can see.  Ultimately, probably not worth your time.

She's Out of My League

She’s Out Of My League may sound like a self-help seminar for unattractive, awkward males (that’s what the look from the girl at the ticket counter told me, very judgmental I might add), but the film is anything but that. It really is just the story of a guy who got really lucky.
            Kirk, played by Jay Baruchel, is a low level, socially awkward TSA security agent, rated a 5 by his peers, who somehow lands a date with blonde bombshell Molly (Alice Eve). Molly is a 10, and if this were the real world, she wouldn’t give Kirk the time of day. But since Molly seems to like him, he has to try his hardest to not screw it up, which if you’ve seen any romantic comedy since the invention of film, you know that he is going to screw it up, and that it is going to be very funny.
            Jay Baruchel may be the only problem I have with this movie. I enjoyed him when he made his debut in Tropic Thunder as a supporting actor but he isn’t a good leading man (Hollywood disagrees because he has three movies coming out this year alone). He isn’t believable as the lucky guy who gets the hot girl, mostly because he has the body of a ten-year-old child, and because he acts with his arms. If Baruchel needs to show some sort of emotion he does it by flailing his skinny little arms in the air, the way normal people do when they want to really exaggerate a “what in the world are you talking about?” moment. Its like he was trying to make himself look bigger in case any large predators were around. I half expected a hawk to swoop down and carry him off while he squeaked in protest.
            Thankfully, he is surrounded by a whole host of supporting characters who spend their time rescuing the movie from Baruchel. His three friends take the brunt of the work and although they are all no-name actors, they do a pretty good job. Fans of That 70’s Show will be pleased to see Kitty pulling out her trademark grin and high-pitched laughter. Many of the characters are overplayed, much like Stepbrothers was, but it actually feels perfect in this film and makes it significantly funnier. Top all that off with a surprisingly charming leading lady and you’ve got a comedy that lifts itself above just mere mediocrity. That, and a scene depicting the “sprucing up” of a man’s “combat” zone for relations of an intimate nature, makes it worth a watch.
Predictability and Jay Baruchel aside, She’s Out Of My League isn’t a bad film and is at least worth a matinee.

she's out of my league

it’s certainly no “hangover”, but it’s pretty funny.  if you can tolerate the “R” rated language.  why does every movie out these days have to have the “f” word every ten seconds?
one character in here refuses to cuss.  his friends try to get him to say something by offering him money.  and that’s kinda funny.  whenever one else is dropping “f” bombs all over the place this kid is making references to princess Jasmine and magic carpet rides.
it’s a story we’ve seen a hundred times and will see a hundred more.  totally hot babe falls for dude way under her station.  but ya know what?  we see this in everyday life.  always hot women with dudes we just have to scratch our heads over.  and it’s easy i think for people to relate to this film because who hasn’t had thier share of self confidence issues?  i know i sure have.
but it really is a nice little romantic comedy.  the supporting characters are really funny and the main characters,  Jay Baruchel and Alice Eve are pretty good.  i can’t say there’s a tremendous amount of chemistry between the two.  i mean they are good, just not sparks flying off the screen.  but that’s kinda rare anyway.
with the Bounty Hunter coming out this weekend this is my pick for date night this week.  i prefer a less crowded movie theater and you fools will be packing the Gerard Butler/Jennifer Anniston vehicle this weekend.  i bet the language isn’t so bad in that one….but whatever.
it’s a good hard 7 out of 10.
