All of their life, Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) have been dreaming of their perfect wedding.  Liv is a successful lawyer at a big company and Emma is a teacher at an elementary school. Both have contrasting personalities; Liv likes to do things her way and will do anything to obtain what she wants, while Emma is soft-spoken and thinks the best of everyone. Nothing can tear the two best friends apart! Or so they thought.

Both lovely ladies are proposed to (finally!) by their boyfriends. Yay! ...Right?

They go to reserve at the Plaza Hotel, a location they wanted to hold their weddings since forever.  Apparently, their dates got mixed up and the new brides are going to have their special day on the same day! Chaos and appearance-killing plans let loose when the two new rivals try to ruin the other one's wedding!

I give the movie: 2.5/5

Not exactly the best that chick-flick queen (Kate Hudson) and chick-flick princess (Anne Hatthaway) have to offer. Hatthaway, by the way, is nominated for an Oscar best actress for another movie about getting married (Rachel Getting Married), but she is not getting married in that movie.

Ok, lame puns aside, I did enjoy myself in this movie (c'mon, those two actresses are gorgeous) but yeah, it can't be taken seriously.

Last Say: 

Watch it only if the other movies available are The Wedding Game and Love Matters, which, incidentally, is what happened to me! Still, it did have its funny moments =)

BRIDE WARS (2009)

BOTTOM LINE: Lacking any wit, charm, fun or comedy, the only saving grave of “Bride Wars” is that Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway have good chemistry in this boring tale of two brides-to-be who find their respective weddings booked in to the same day, time and place.

THE GOOD: On paper, the concept of “Bride Wars” is actually quite good for a comedy. Two best friends, Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) dream of having their weddings at the Plaza Hotel in June because of their very fond memory of a wedding they saw there when they were children. These two best friends get along extremely well until an oversight at a boutique wedding planner sees them booked in to the Plaza Hotel on the same day and time. With neither willing to budge, both women get in to a battle royale over securing the best of all resources they can for the wedding, including out-doing and embarrassing each other, and competing for guests. Kate Hudson is excellent as the more cut-throat, “looking out for number one” Liv and it is a character she could play more often as opposed to anything goofy and/or fun. Anne Hathaway plays a different type of character as the usually meek and mild Emma who suddenly develops a backbone. Another surprise is that both actresses work very well together; the chemistry is spot on while also making for an effective contrast between the two. Candice Bergen does her best in a supporting role as the exclusive wedding planner who is in effect the meat in the sandwich.

THE BAD: “Bride Wars” lacks the wit, charm, fun and comedy required to make the basic premise work. There is about as much life to this piece as a plank of wood. Although Hudson and Hathaway do their best to make the thing come alive, the events that unfold are completely unengaging, boring and sometimes unpleasant to watch as the two girls fight each other for something which in the end is so trivial. A better director might have made that triviality funny but unfortunately this is not the case here. As the film goes along, not only are you not laughing but you have no sympathy whatsoever for what the characters are up to. This culminates in to a climax that is far from satisfying with the more nicer of the girls losing out. But wait, being a Hollywood film, the nice girl still manages to get a replacement husband in the end, just in the nick of time for everyone to live happily ever after and to show off photo albums of memories. It does not help that the film looks cheap. Despite both girls being seemingly well off and affording such extravagant weddings, the cinematography and production design are quite lame and give the impression of a made-for-tv movie rather than a cinematic feature. “Bride Wars” is a disappointing piece of rubbish that in better hands might have actually been quite good.

I’d love to walk down the aisle with either Kate Hudson or Anne Hathaway, or be in a love triangle involving these two beautiful women. Bride Wars was a good vehicle for both actresses.
We’ve all heard the horror stories of how brides seem to turn into evil creatures leading up to their wedding. Well, this film shows us that process, and at the same time reminds us how important friends are.
Kate Hudson’s plays Anne Hathaway’s best friend Liv, who is a successful lawyer and we are lead to believe isn’t keen on showing emotions. Throughout the majority of the film, she is a cold hearted, selfish woman who only thinks of herself and bosses everyone around, but she has some sort of epiphany (big surprise, right) near the film’s end, and becomes a softer, more caring version of herself.
Anne Hathaway is Liv, a middle school teacher who is reallty a bit of a pushover. I tend to love Anne Hathaway, but here lately her roles all seem to be the same. She starts off as some meek, unappreciated mouse, has some major event happen, and gradually morphs into a more confident creature. The problem with her here is that she’s borderline bitch. She says it best in the films when she addresses her fiancee saying that she’s not the same person she used to be. That may be true, but I dis like her better at the beginning of the film than I did the end, the reverse can be said for Kate Hudson.
Candice Bergen doesn’t have a huge role in the film, but she does play an integral part in the picture as Marion St. Clair, the premiere wedding planner. She also narrates the story.
This isn’t a die hard chick flick, but it is a chick flick, just the same time. For my taste, it was a bit too touchy feely, but it was still pretty good and funny. I’ve been reading all kind of reviews saying that Kate Hudson should get away from these romantic comedies. That may be the case, but she should be proud of her performance in this one. It’s very well crafted, funny film that everyone can watch. Guys, let me warn you, though, chances are girls will need box of tissues (I speak from personal experience).
