Big Lebowski, The (1998)

Hoo yeah, more than just a pretty face!

Overview: Some Dude gets caught up in a case of mistaken identity turned kidnapping investigation.

Performance:
Perfectly professional, no one over-acting (any more than anybody else). The lines in this movie couldn't have been as well delivered if the casting were different. Delivery and direction were incredible. Top drawer. Not really impressed by Flea though, to tell you the truth.

Cinematography:
Incredible. From high-art dream sequences to slow-motion character introductions, this movie fits right up there with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Director Gus Van Sant's works (Jerry; Elephant) for scene-setting. Even some regular scenes in the bowling alley and in Dude's house caught my eye as being really well storyboarded.

"You don't fucking mess wit da Jesus, meinh."

The Cohen Brothers are known for their quirky dialogues, they don't let up here either. The lines in this movie are great and the situations are made even more hilarious by the script. Perfect.

Plot:
When you look at it from an overview perspective, it's really not that original a concept, but the Cohen brothers make it seem as though it was the first "I got caught up in something over my head" plot and the twists are predicatble while still throwing you for just one more loop over the last.

Mood:
Utterly silly. The characters were awesome and over the top, even the bit players like the Iron Lung guy and his kid, the cop who finds the car, the thugs throughout. The dream sequences and the characters really made this movie weird and quirky, and it was perfectly done without being too much. The Big Lebowski could really have done without the stupid narrator though, I don't get it.

It's The Big Lebowski. If you haven't seen it, you were probably in a coma or something. This belongs in everyone's repertoire.

The Big Lebowski

The Dude, I think, displays the perfect characteristics of the cinematic "slacker". He's unmotivated regardless of reason, except when it comes to money (and keeping his johnson). He genuinely wants to resist the wills of others, but he's lazy, so he can only muster a passive resistance. He's cynical, and honest about his cynicism.

Jeff Lebowski is shuffled from location to location by forces beyond his power to stop. I hadn't thought about it before DLP sent me the link to this image, but the Dude survives on his ability to be completely impartial to circumstance. He figures that every one either has his own agenda or is bat shit crazy.   And regardless of whether they're a good person or an evil person, he doesn't judge anyone as better or worse than him, and he is insightful enough to know what others think of him.

On the DVD extras, there's a story told by one of the Coen Brothers that Jeff Bridges would come up and ask if they thought that the Dude burned one on the way to wherever the scene is taking place. They'd nod and Bridges would rub his eyes really hard before the take. I think  that shows Jeff Bridges' care for detail, even in a character as subtle as the Dude. If you watch him during the movie, he seems to be the only one that's listening to everyone else. Everyone else is too busy shouting to pay attention to anyone else.

The Dude mumbles and shuffles around in jellies, wearing clothes that look like you caught him on the day that he's doing laundry. Even when he's righteously upset -- "They're gonna kill that poor woman, man"--  the Dude's easily diffused by a mocking Walter, who only has to mimic the Dude with exaggerated hand gestures to shut him up -- "they're gonna kill-that poor-woman....."

One of the first lines of the movie, in the Stranger's intro speech:
Sometimes there's a man, I won't say a hero, 'cause what's a hero? But sometimes there's a man, and I'm talking about the Dude here. Sometimes there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there.
is given new credence when you consider that because the Dude is the only neutral man (or woman) in the world -- not even phased by the word "Vagina"......

-- as he's the only person that is completely indifferent, he is the only one that can be trusted to not be phased by everyone else's bullshit. The Dude is a detective.

He is played with such care and reverence by Jeff Bridges that now Jeff Bridges cannot live the rest of his life without being thought of as the Dude. So he seems to have embraced it. Did you see him at the Oscars? He'll forever wear long hair and a beard. It's a good style for him

The Slacker Movie Round of The Grudge Match begins with what could be Jeff Bridges ' most well-loved role as Jefferey "The Dude" Lebowski (based on the real-life LA weirdo Jeff Dowd ) in The Big Lebowski . The Big Lebowski

Apparently, my man card has been null and void until a few minutes ago when I finished this film. Yes, ladies, this is not a film for you. No, there isn’t anything chauvinistic about it, but it’s just a guy flick. That’s all there is to it.
I’m sure you’ve all seen and/or heard many references to “The Dude”. Well, this is where those references originate from. More specifically, Jeff Bridges’ character of Jeff Lebowski.
The good…this isn’t your run of the mill comedy, but rather more of the Cohen Brothers humor where you have to think for a minute before you laugh. The story is excellent. Kind of has a cop chase feel to it, but not quite. Acting is great. These actors seemed like they really had fun with this one, especially John Goodman and John Turtrro.
The bad…if you’re not careful, you can get lost trying to figure out what’s going on with this thing. That’s not necessarily a knock on the film, but every Cohen Brothers film that I’ve seen has the same issue. Tara Reid’s character could very well have been a criminal mastermind behind everything if they would hav been a little more creative with everything, but instead she’s just some random “trophy wife” that gets allegedly kidnapped. For a film where two of the leads are obsessed with bowling and in the middle of a tournament, there was surprisingly little bowling in here. I’m just saying.
I think I’m going to start calling myself the dude and walking around in a bathrobe and boxer shorts. Nah, but after you see this picture, you’ll feel the need to mellow out and veg. The Dude’s way of life is that intoxicating. Now, this isn’t the world’s perfect film, but it does accomplish what movies are made for, to entertain and create and escape from the harsh reality of the world. For that reason alone, despite the total greatness of the film itself, you should watch this.

Really? really? so i really have to write anything about this movie? If you havn’t seen it, then you are by no means a real human being to me. GO SEE IT! its a cult classic and i don’t feel the need to talk about it more than the fact that this movie is 100% awesome in visual form. There are even scenes that i completly forgot about until watching it again. It makes me remember why there is an entire collective of people out there who have Lebowski fests once, or several times a year. http://www.lebowskifest.com/ see? Base Score = 7 +1 for pure awesomeness -1 for having your friend all over you and get into your mouth. +1 for the massive amount of confusion this movie gives both the characters in the film and the viewer until the ending +1 for “I can get you a toe. I can get you a toe by 3. Painted!” -1 for at times the movie is slow, but stick with it and it pays off +1 for a Caucasion (white russion) and Oat...
