Classic, classic fucking movie. This is what college movies should be. I usually hate the shit out of college movies, but for some reason this one is way above and beyond the rest. I cannot honestly think of a better college movie (well ok i can, but not in the frat-house way).

It has been a while since i watched this movie, and lemme tell you there was a lot of things i forgot about. I do think that my favorite part was when they were in ROTC(or the college version of that) and some of the guys from Delta decided it was a good place to play golf. in the field that the ROTC was having their practice. Just think about that for a second.

The other thing that caught me off guard was the amount of nudity in this movie. Its something that a lot of movies are lacking nowadays. And this one was actually done tastefully. Yes, thats right, I said tastefully. It was rarely used in a situation that was sexual, mind you there was a few scenes where it was, but for the most part it was just awesome. Along those same points, theres twice in this movie where one of the main guys from Omega takes his girl up to the overlook and they are both talking. But at one point she says “well if your not even going to try i’m not” and takes off rubber gloves. lol, classic scene.

John Belushi. Almost enough said, except that this is his best role in a movie that i can ever remember, except for of course, the Blues Brothers. But in this role, he is the drunken guy that always seems to have his spectacular moments, like being able to drink a bottle of Jack in one gulp, and of course, he stealthy jittery dance thing he does in this movie. Fucking fantastic.
All in all, even though this movie is over 30 years old, it is still great to this day, and if you havn’t seen it, then you have not ever seen a good college, or maybe even the best college movie ever made.

The Animal House

Since this film was released, there have been many that have taken elements from it and incorporated tem into their own film, or spun them off into their own film. In other words, this is the film responsible for most film about college debauchery. Without this one, none of the others would have been made.
John Belushi isn’t well known to me, other than his roles on Saturday Night Live and in The Blues Brothers. However, from what I know about him, this seems to be the kind of role he was born to play.
Tom Hulce and Karen Allen are the only other actors in this film that had major roles and went on to careers. Both give typical early career type performances…nothing special.
Donald Sutherland and Kevin Bacon make appearances, but neither stars.
John Vernon is the best character in the film in terms of development and execution. His Dean Wormer is a despicable villainous slime ball of a character that the audience has nothing but ill feelings toward. Is it any wonder his wife was willing to step out on him with one of the Deltas?
I kind of expected more hilarity and antics in this film that what I got. That may be because of what films that have come since this one have caused me to expect, though. The chaos that ensued at the climactic parade scene is the kind of stuff I was looking for throughout. Also, I was expecting panty raids and other forms of fraternity nonsense. I got no such pleasure, short of a peeping tom scene with John Belushi.
Overall, this isn’t half bad. There are some things that you have to remember the time period it was filmed in and the era in which it is based in order to fully appreciate it, but that happens. I wouldn’t call this a classic, and in fact, I think its a tad overrated, but it is definately worth your time.
