I Love You, Beth Cooper Review

For my project, I toyed with the idea of putting I Love You, Beth Cooper straight into my do-not-watch list, but I didn’t and do you know why? (Of course you don’t! Why do people always ask that stupid question—as if people could read minds! Sometimes the idiot that’s being asked the question responds with a purely speculative answer which can at times come across as insulting and then the person asking the question gets all, “WHAT? NO! Why would you think that?” Why are people so odd? Oh, sorry!) I’ll tell you the real reason why I watched it. I saw it because practically every critic hated it! The viewers weren’t big fans either. The movie ended up losing money! That means that people also hated this movie. Yes, every single person on Earth watched this movie and vowed to flambé the writers. Tough crowd!

Joining I Love You, Beth Cooper in the category of bad movies in 2009 were New Moon and Bride Wars. However, unlike Beth Cooper, New Moon received minimal acclaim from respected critics and Bride Wars had success at the box office in spite of its terrible reviews by both critics and viewers. Beth Cooper had the “honor” of being the standard to which all bad movies in 2009 were compared. Every time I would read a review about a bad movie, they always said the same thing, “At least it wasn’t as bad as Beth Cooper.” Because Beth Cooper was universally hated and reviled unlike the other two, I had to see the worst of the worst and witness it for myself and guess what? It wasn’t all that bad.

I still consider Miss March to be the worst movie of 2009 and I’ve seen a host of really bad movies. Some even come close to Miss March. Beth Cooper can’t hold a candle to Miss March when it comes to bad film. That doesn’t mean that I love it, but the moniker of worst movie of the year it did not deserve. In fact, I’ll even go as far as to say that I enjoyed a lot of the movie. I wouldn’t shout it out to the world or sky-write it—does a blog count? The fact is there were some very funny parts and some nice moments to the film. I wouldn’t say that it’s for everybody, but then who is it for?

I found pin pointing an audience for this movie rather difficult. On its surface it looked like an ordinary movie for teens, but was it really? Yes, there were graduating high school students involved, there was illegal drinking going on, some house parties, some sexual themes, some fights, name calling, bullies, blah, blah, blah… However, here’s my point, if this were a teen movie, then why did the teens hate it so much?

Chris Columbus was the director of this movie and is one of the most brilliant directors of all time. In fact, I’m willing to bet that of all of your favorite movies, at least one of them was directed by Chris. He directed great movies like Gremlins, The Goonies, Adventures in Babysitting, Home Alone, the first two Harry Potter movies, I can’t see him making a kids movie and then having the kids hate it. I mean, let’s face it, the man is a genius and he knows his audience. I don’t think this movie was for teens, but I think I may have an idea who the audience was.

I am willing to bet dollars to pesos that this movie was made for the nerdy 30-40 year old. I consider myself a geek. I wouldn’t go as far as to say I am a nerd. Oh, who am I kidding? I probably am a nerd! That must explain why I enjoyed this movie and it also proves my point that the audience for this movie was the adult nerds who would just love to go back in time and have one more shot at the jocks and the cool crowd. We would probably mess it up yet again. Once a nerd, always a nerd!

I don’t recommend many people watch I Love You, Beth Cooper, unless you fall in that small category that I just explained. However, no matter how bad this movie was for the rest of the world I have to give some recognition to the casting directors of this movie. They picked actors that looked and fit the parts they were playing instead of conforming to some sort of stereotypical nerd, jock or goddess. The nerds were just regular guys and the girls were cute, diverse, of normal intelligence and most importantly they were non-sticks. I admired that throughout the whole movie. In my opinion that was very well done. Of course if that is the best I can come up with for the good quality of the movie, you can imagine just how bad this movie really was, unless you’re a 35 year old geek or nerd like me!

Starring: Hayden Panettiere, Paul Rust, Jack Carpenter Comedy, 2009A nerdy Valedictorian (Denis) declares his love for the blonde pretty popular head cheerleader during his graduation speech. He invites her to his non party and a crazy night of randomness that includes parties, drinking, and locker room group showers ensue after Beth's crazy Army boyfriend crashes the party and sends them all on the run. Does the girl of hims dreams live up to the fantasy?

• This movie hit upon just about every coming of age teen movie cliche there is. The popular girls, the geeky duo that spends their childhood getting beat up, the bully jock, and the rich snobby girl who throws lavish parties in her parents beautiful home.
• Paul Rust is not so believable to me as a high school teenager. He just looks a little too old to me. His character and some of the dialogue is so incredible awkward. Almost too awkward at times so that it's not really funny.
• This movie does have some funny poignant moments. Overall though, I just got the sense that the movie was trying to hard.
• The movie got better as it went along though and I lived the ending.

Just Me

i love you beth cooper

is not that funny.  that chick is totally smoking hot.  i actually said, “holy shit” out loud when she took her graduation gown off and was standing there in some daisy dukes and tight tank top.  wow.

but other than that, you’ve all seen this movie before.  about 50 times.  and out of those 50 times, 46 of them are better.

they made a valiant effort to produce a grade A coming of age teen flick.  they’ve got all the ingredients.  nerdy, love struck kid, gorgeous head cheerleader with deep rooted self esteem issues, the beefcake older boyfriend (who this time around is coked up), the slutty and snooty girlfriends, the equally nerdy best friend.  but it’s just all been done before.  and better.

it had it’s moments, don’t get me wrong.  but there’s just not much senimentality or really anything at all to get any kind of emotional response from the audience.  at least from me anyway.  a few good jokes but nothing special.  other than looking at that chicks backside in those super high heels.  she must be like a miniature person in real life because she was still a good 6 inches shorter than the nerdy hero.  who was like a foot shorter than the beefcake, coked up boyfriend.

the hottie blonde’s ditzy white friend was the best part about the movie.  she was really perfect for her part.  comic relief when the film started to flounder.  she would say something that would make me laugh.  and i really wish i had her number.

2 out of 5.  i don’t care enough to try to think of something witty.

With the recent passing of John Hughes, "I Love You Beth Cooper" made me dislike it even more. This movie based on a book is a weak John Hughes clone that is very dumb, crude and messy. The movie concerns a high school boy who makes his Valedictorian speech at graduation and calls out all the kids who made his life hell in school. He also tells the lead cheerleader Beth Cooper that he loves her. The boy and his best friend (who every one thinks is gay) hooks up with Beth and her pretty and popular two friends and then cruise the town looking for parties. They are also being chased by Beth's boyfriend who is a muscular jock type who the boy had bad mouthed in his speech. This leads to chase scenes, slapstick and a lot of unfunny situations. What amused me was that this movie tried to come off as raunchy and tries to push it's PG-13 rating. Sorry but there is a movie called "Superbad" that knows how to get it done and I think is the standard bearer of this type of movie. This movie rips off "Sixteen Candles", "Breakfast Club", "Adventures in Babysitting", "Say Anything", "Superbad" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and very badly. The director is Chris Columbus who is a Hughes protege and had directed "Babysitting", "Home Alone" and the first Harry Potter movie. He is not one of my favorite directors and he should have known better than to make an embarrassing Hughes rip off.

i watched the first 20 minutes of this movie, and then was forced to skip through the rest. “forced” by the lack of funny i beheld.

to summarize this movie: a guy says he loves some girl. some shit happens. they don’t have sex. yes that was a spoiler, just there. i’m hoping that by spoiling it for you you’ll have lost interest in watching it. you could do something else with your time, like play tennis. tennis is fun. this movie is not.

i give it a 1 out of 7. if you want a comedy then don’t watch this movie. if you don’t want a comedy, still don’t watch it.

I Love You, Beth Cooper — 1

I had no idea going into this movie what to expect from it. I heard nothing about it, never saw a trailer. All I knew was that Claire Bennet, aka Hayden Panettiere was in it. So I thought I would give it a go.

Holy shit was I wrong. I actually turned the damn movie off about 25 minutes into it. Literally almost nothing happened in that time. I never got a good laugh out of anything. The movie was actually painful to watch it was so fucking terrible.

Stay the fuck away from this garbage heap. I would have rather gone sliding down a hill on my eyeballs than expose myself to the little amount of this movie that I did.

I Love You, Beth Cooper

Remember when teen comedies were all about two things…raunch and comedy? Well, these days, they have all but abandoned the raunch and try as they may, aren’t funny. Take I Love You, Beth Cooper for instance. The picture starts out pretty good, but then fizzles on the comedy side. Thankfully, it doesn’t get all drama-laden, but the jokes and gags and whatnot, while a valiant effort, just aren’t executed to a level high enough to make them worthwhile.
This film is based ona book. I’ve never heard or read it, but from those that have, this was pretty much a slap in the face to the fans. I’d have to read the book to tell you why, though, and if this outrage is warranted.
It is good to see Hayden Panettiere doing things on the big screen and away from Heroes, though, I do wonder if she can play anything but a cheerleader.
Lauren London is a little wasted here. She seems as if she’s on the verge of breaking out in Hollywood, but these minor roles where she’s doesn’t even get noticed, aren’t going to her career any good. Having said that, she and Lauren Storm do a good job as the bitchy/horny best friends…typical of a cheerleader, right?
The army guys really take the cake. Not because they are the best actors or anything like that, but rather they seem like the typical cyborg army guys. What’s even better is that they sell the roid rage, doped up part of their characters, and even act like they’re in battle or something. I was half expecting them to pull out some guns at some point.
Newcomer Paul Rust isn’t bad as the lovable loser. To me, he was like a mix of Zack Braff and Jason Biggs (and all the characters, they’ve played). This guy couldn’t seem to catch a break, though. Everything he did seemed to end up wrong.
In high school, I did pine over this girl for most of my 4 years, but I at least talked to her. I never wasted time by not talking to her, and even if I hadn’t, I doubt I would hav had the balls to get up in front of all the friends and family and declare my love for her. It is that part of the plot that makes this film interesting and cute. Not to mention sets up a nice little string of events that last the length of the film.
I Love You, Beth Cooper  isn’t going to win any awards, but it is a cute little film. Should it go on your list of films that you must see before you die? No, but it is one of those good date flicks, what with it being a romantic comedy and all. There are things that could have been done better and things that could have been done worse. My suggestion is that it is worth a viewing, but you don’t necessarily have to go out of your way to watch it, unless you’re a huge Hayden Panettiere fan.
