John Tucker Must Die

Please choose one of the following:

a. It has been a hard day’s at work and you want to wind up and relax and watch a no-brainer movie that does not require you to think much at all.

b. You don’t want a no-brainer movie that has those dumb bimbos. The whole package is essential: beauty with brains. No, not those cheesy and corny one-liners too! (Once in a while is ok though.)

c. You are a one heck of a feminist and are fed up with movies usually referring to ladies as the weaker sex. You want the girl power roar to rip on the big screen!

d. Whereas you are a guy and you are looking for some great looking eye-candy to feast your eyeballs, with the likes of Brittany Snow, Ashanti, Sophia Bush, Arielle Kebbel and even the literal hot-hootchie mama Jenny McCarthy goodness onscreen.

e. You really want to laugh out loud with some funny scenes and jokes. Nevermind if some of them were overused gags. As long as they work!

f. All of the above.

Before I forget…

The Gist

Jesse Metcalfe is John Tucker (what a name) who is the coolest guy at high school and he is three timing on Ashanti, Sophia Bush and Arielle Kebbel. The three girls find out about his over-suaveness and decide to get back on him by converting Brittany Snow from a nobody then to a somebody to seduce him to only break his heart later. Later, … you know how the story ends.

As a guy, I should hate this film, based on its premise. After watching it, though, I really liked and understood it. With all the wrongs John Tucker did to these girls, I would have wanted to get back at him, too.
While the girls are plotting and conspiring, the misadventures they cause are quite interesting and hilarious. The thong scene should go down in cinema history. The over-the-top basketball shots aren’t bad. Besides all the hot girls in the film,  thy keep the general guy’s attention.
Even though the film is called John Tucker Must Die, Brittany Snow, who plays Kate, is the main character. Kate is your typical girl next door who just moved into a new school. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time gets her noticed and starts the plot moving. Brittany really sells this character, but she doesn’t get overly emotional, as most female characters tend to do in film.
Ashanti, Arielle Kebbel, and Sophia Bush play the vindictive girls John Tucker is dating as the film begins. If I would have any one of them in high school, I wouldn’t have been trying to hide them from the other, but then again, I didn’t have his looks. Each girl makes sure to bring some individual personality to their character. Of the three, though, I have to say Sophia Bush’s character is the most likable(even though I’ve always loved Ashanti).
Jenny McCarthy shows up as Kate’s mom. Can we say MILF? She seems to be the kind of woman who settles for this guy or that guy and they just leave, which scars Kate. With the exception of one or two scenes, she’s just there to be the hot mom that everyone (guys and girls) drool over. All that was missing was for her to be running around in her underwear or washing her car in a bikini or something less.
Jesse Metcalfe plays the infamous John Tucker. This part wrote itself, but I have to give Metcalfe his props. He really sold this character to the audience. It would have been so easy to just have John Tucker be your typical jock jerk who gets all the girls, but Metcalfe makes him so likable, it’s reminiscent of Freddie Prinze, Jr.’s character is She’s All That. The thing about John Tucker is that no matter what happens to him, he still comes out smelling like roses. He should go into politics!
Even though officially, this isn’t a “chick flick”, there is quite a bit of man-bashing, so I’m labeling it so. Normally I don’t love movies that fall in that category. They’re just ok at best. Well, this film changes that perception for me. I wonder if there will be others to follow suit. This is a good film that doesn’t get too raunchy or over-the-top, and is entertaining from beginning to end.
