High School Girl Rika: Zombie HunterThis is the third and at the time of writing also the final part of the “Nihonbi” series with an insanely long full title: “The Ultimate Weapon High School Girl Rika: Zombie Hunter VS the Ultimate Zombie Grorian”. The original title is: “Saikyô heiki joshikôsei: Rika - zonbi hantâ vs saikyô zonbi Gurorian”. Phew…
So, our high school girl Rika (
Risa Kudo) and her friend Nami go to visit Rika’s grandpa Ryuhei who lives in a small village. Ryuhei is a retired genius surgeon and also a master swordsman. And he wears an eyepatch over his left eye, because it makes him look cooler. He's also a tribute to the manga character
Black Jack. Now, as soon the girls arrive, they’re attacked by zombies but they manage to get to his house, and this is where they meet, as always, a bunch of different characters of all sorts: slutty maids who flash their tits for no reason; Ryuhei’s greedy, cheating wife Sayaka who is, like Hitomi in “Zombie Self-Defense Force”, willing to let everyone fuck her, including zombies; her “brother” Tomoya; grandpa Ryuhei, of course; Takashi, an intelligent zombie; and finally three random and rather annoying dudes whose names I forgot. That’s a lot of characters and most of them are here just to add to the bodycount. Anyway, our party learns that if they want to end this madness they’ll have to defeat the zombie leader – the abominable Grorian!!!

“HSGR: ZH” has the best gore and special effects out of the three films. However, it’s too short of action. There are three battles in total and all of them don’t last longer than 5 minutes. The three fights are good however (they were coordinated by Tak Sakaguchi), and they feature “Oneechanbara”-like special effects, but end too damn quickly (and aren’t as awesome). You could call this film “Oneechanbara” Lite.
And there aren’t enough boobs. There weren’t any in “Zombie Self-Defense Force”, but they made up for it in other areas, while “HSGR: ZH” doesn’t have any real redeeming qualities as the rest of the film is filled with just below average gore and slapstick comedy. A shame, if you think of it, because high school girls and zombies sounded like a pretty good combination.
It does have the most interesting characters, though and certain scenes associated with them. I’m talking mainly about the badass surgeon swordsman Ryuhei. The man slashes zombies all around the clock, and doesn’t speak a word until the very end. When a zombie bites Rika on the arm, everyone starts panicking and screaming, but not Ryuhei. No. He cold-bloodedly chops his granddaughters fucking arm off, right there!!!... but only to later saw on her the buffed and muscular arm of the legendary American Zombie Hunter, thus making Rika some sort of a Chosen One.
So, a quick recap of the series: “Attack Girls’ Swim Team vs the Undead” has the boobs, “HSGR: ZH” has the action quality (but not quantity), and “Zombie Self-Defense Force” is the best overall. All three are worth seeing, though.
As far as “HSGR: ZH” is concerned, it should’ve had more action and then it would’ve been just sweet.
