X-Men Origins: Wolverine

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Directed by Gavin Hood, starring Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, and Danny Huston - Rated PG-13 The summer movie season was supposed to have begun with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but I think it’s going to have to wait for Star Trek to truly begin. Wolverine, despite featuring fun performances from Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, and Danny Huston, tries to cram too much in what should have been a smaller, character-driven action movie. Wolverine goes for quantity over quality when it comes to character, though. The story begins in Canada in 1845 with a sickly adolescent James Logan (Wolverine) being watched by Victor Creed (Sabretooth), the son of the groundskeeper. The groundskeeper shows up, drunk and yelling, and things get violent, allowing James to unleash his skeletal claws and yell up at the camera. Yelling up at the camera must be one of Wolverine’s mutant powers because he does it every chance he gets, which becomes unintentionally...

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Review

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE Upon seeing this movie announced a few years ago, I was psyched.  Upon seeing the epic trailer, I was still excited, if not more so. As the release came closer, I looked at RottenTomatoes as I usually do.  Last Friday, I was greeted by an icky 40%. Ouch. However, Rotten Tomatoes does an average of positive and negative reviews, so you have to look at the average score. I don’t remember what it was, but honestly, my expectations were lowered. Looking back, I find that to be a good thing, because I was pleasantly surprised. Wolverine gets going within a few minutes of the start time. First known as James, then Logan, and then Wolverine, and his half brother Victor Creed/Sabretooth, run away from home after James’ father is killed. James sprouts bone claws and the pair stick together through The Civil War, World War I, WWII, and the Vietnam war (by the way, this is shown in a really cool credit sequence). The two...

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Action, 2009 (Rated PG 13) Starring: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston This movie provides the back story on Wolverine one of the Characters in X Men. We meet his brother Victor and it takes the viewer from his childhood when he first discovered his mutant abilities to adulthood as he and his brother fight side by side using their powers as tools for the US Government. Eventually, he turns his back on that life of killing in favor of becoming a lumberjack but his old life comes back for him and he finds himself once again on the battlefield except this time it's against the man he used to fight for. I really hate it when people are mean and evil for no reason and when good innocent people die. Both happen within the first 30 minutes of this film. Great acting, great action. The movie also has a twist that I didn't expect involving the love of his life who is murdered by the very same group that he used to fight with. I put off watching this movie for a while. I wanted...

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

I give the movie: 3.0/5 It's a great movie to look at, no doubt. What it lacks in character development, it compensates with cool action sequences that befits a summer blockbuster. But that said, Wolverine is just a solid back-story about how the super-strong mutant got his tough body and memory lapse of the past. All the characters which appear on the poster are memorable only for the brief moments they appear on-screen, and none of them were given the space to be as memorable as the titular hero. FINAL SAY: While thousands of fan-boys worldwide are still crying foul over the underused and miscast fan-favourite Gambit, this movie is still popcorn-worthy.

Wolverine starts out showing his childhood in Canada in 1845. From there we  get a montage of him and his brother Sabertooth fighting in the Civil  War, WWI, storming Normandy in WWII (Shades of Saving Private Ryan) and  Vietnam.  I don’t think we know the time period the rest of the movie is in,  but I assume it’s the modern era.  Of course it’s before the first X-men  movie, but remember that was in the near future. Hmmmm Anyway next is a team of Black Ops mutants, led by a younger Stryker  (Who was in X-men 2.)  The team includes Wolverine, Sabertooth,  Deadpool, the Blob (whose not fat yet) and a few others I didn’t know.   The team goes to Nigeria to recover a meteor, from which adamantium can  be made.  While there Wolverine walks off because Stryker threatened the  villagers lives. 6 years later Logan is living in Canada with...

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Okay, I am a huge fan of the first two X-Men films and the second one in particular is one of the best comic book based movies I have seen. The third one is pretty weak, but okay enough that I can at least watch it in all its messy glory. One of my favorite Marvel characters is Wolverine and I think Hugh Jackman has taken that role and perfectly made it his own. So when I see that there is a Wolverine film, I am excited, even though I know it may kinda hurt a little. Wolverine didn’t kinda hurt at all, in fact, it took every bit of my being and made number two all over it, then proceeded to pee on it for the rest of the movies runtime. I actually liked the first act of of this one too, which had a very cool opening credit sequence and a nice little Wolverine livin’ in the woods storyline going on. That was all set up however, set up for some of the worst filmed action, the worst created computer generated imagery, and the some of the worst scenes I have ever been a...

X-Men Origins:Wolverine

After an opening credit sequence that flashes through Logan/Wolvrine(Hugh Jackman)  and Victor’s/SabreTooth (Liev Scheiber) involvement in various wars including the Civil War and World War II.  We see more of Victors true charater  in Vietnam, While there going through a village  Victor is confronted by a soldier as he is about to rape a Vietnamese girl, Logan comes to his aid and they are put before a firing squad. ‘X-Men Origins’ an Unnecessary but Exciting Sequel, Hugh Jackman Gives His All

Ahh, summer movie season is here! Highly-anticipated releases are dropping in the next 4 months. What a better way to kick it off than with a superhero flick: X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Now throughout the other X-Men movies, Hugh Jackman always tends to be the best part about them. But other stars were great throughout the original trilogy, too. Patrick Wilson, most recently in the bomb Watchmen, was Professor Xavier, Halle Berry was Storm, Ian McKellen was Magneto (the other best part about the Marvel hits) and James Marsden was Cyclops. Sadly, none of them return in this flashback tale of Logan's origin, mostly because it centers on only Jackman's character. X-Men Origins: Wolverine takes us through the mutant's history. In it, we meet Victor Creed (Liev Schreiber from Defiance, Logan's brother, fantastic) William Stryker (Danny Huston), John Wraith (will.i.am), Frederick J. Dukes (Kevin Durand), Wade Wilson (a miscast Ryan Reynolds) and Chris...

x-men origins: wolverine

my first impression after watching this film was, this is pretty bad ass.  i feel the same way after having seen it twice now.  this film is pretty bad ass.  the baddest ass film of the year so far.  it is the definition of summer blockbuster.  lots of action, lots of amazing special effects.  sure, you could use the plot line to strain spaghetti, but hey, this is a summer blockbuster not an oscar contender.  well, maybe for effects. Logan is just one tough SOB.  it’s easy to see why he’s been our favorite comic book character over the last 25 years.  he’s indestructible and has the attitude like someone permantly pissed in his cheerio’s.  who wouldn’t love to be like this guy? if you are a die hard comic nerd, you’re not going to be too impressed with this movie.  according to the comic book nerds that work at the theater, wolverine and sabertooth were never brothers.  and the chick...

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Basic Premise: Just like the title says, this is the origin story of the man codenamed Wolverine. You see him as a kid and then as an adult. This movie takes you through his life and gives you a look at why he's as angry as he is. Review: LOVED IT! Don't let the PG-13 rating fool you. There is plenty of claw-stabbing action and colorful language to go around. Hugh Jackman is the man and he totally brings Wolverine to life. The Marvel people still haven't quite found the right actor for Victor Creed aka Sabertooth yet, but they got closer with Liev Schreiber. Don't get me wrong, his acting was superb but he just wasn't Sabertooth. I don't know, maybe the X-Men cartoon from the nineties has me spoiled or something. I loved his claws though. Oh before I say more, there is a tidbit (nothing hugely important) at the END of the credits. The very end, not to be mistaken with the tidbit that appears a little ways into the credits. So, if you've got the time, stick around. If you've seen...

Wolverine

How could everything that was so good turn so bad? I like comics. I like the X-Men. I liked the first movie and its sequel. I even liked its threequel. So I came into "X-Men: Origins: Wolverine" as a very partial observer. They'd have to work pretty hard to make me walk out of the theater disgruntled. But here's the thing. When it comes to comic-book actioners, the whole movie hinges on the bad guy's evil plan. If the evil plan is good, the movie will be good. Lex Luthor's plan in 1978's "Superman" -- to buy up worthless desert in Nevada, start an earthquake that will sink California into the Pacific Ocean, then clean up as the owner of suddenly invaluable oceanfront property -- is the best evil plan of all time, and it's no coincidence that's the best comic book movie ever made. Here's the evil plan in "Wolverine." Bear with me. Colonel Stryker is a man who hates mutants. His son was a mutant, and this shame made Stryker an ardent mutant-hater. Naturally he organizes a team of...

X-Men Origins Wolverine

Wow, P2P really kicked FOX in the balls this week. I didn't even find out about this until this morning when I was doing my weekly piracy shopping and the dude went, "Nicholas you are gonna kiss me all over." Ok not exactly in those terms but still. So for those who don't know what's been going on. Some douche bag from FOX leaked out a DVD quality work print version of X-Men Origins: Wolverine which is a really big deal because the movies not due for another month. Just let me make this one clear. I think that this was really really bad. It's one thing to bootleg a movie after it's theatrical release but to slam it down this hard when it hasn't had a chance to be released yet is just wrong. I know I bought it, because I really couldn't resist watching. And before any authorities start suing me or draging me off to ISA, I promise you I won't give out any spoilers or show it to anyone. You have my word. But I will say this in FOX's favour. The DVD I bought lacked...

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Those who’ve braved Catwoman have nothing to fear from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. If Catwoman is a flesh-eating bacteria, Wolverine is only a case of man-flu. Yes, the movie is bad, and full of A-Team action sequences. Yes, it was written by a ten-year-old. Yes, it may land Hugh Jackman back doing dinner theatre. But it’s not Catwoman. Nor is itSupergirl. You won’t be left dumbfounded that intelligent human beings created it. Only mildly disappointed, that we’re back where super hero movies were in the 80s… disjointed script, schizoid tone, unconvincing effects and a cast like a C-list celebrity pirate ship. The movie begins in Canada in 1845. Two brothers (who don’t even attempt Canadian accents) are forced from their home. They are mutants. For reasons that aren’t clear, the brothers become involved in every American war for the next hundred years. One day, while on a mission for...

Snick Snick Snick...WOLVERIIIIINE!!!

WARNING:  It's about to get extremely geeky up in 'dis bitch. You have been warned. So I just (by "just" I mean 2 weeks ago) downloaded the demo of the new Wolverine video game that ties into the flick that was released a week ago.  I got about 30 seconds into the demo when I realized something:  What a fucking STUPID ass idea for a video game.  Wanna know why?  Of course you do, you're still reading.  It's simple. Wolverine is indestructible. Video games have health bars, extra guys, small med paks, large med paks, hearts, stimpaks and various other healers that keep you from dying.  But when you're playing a game, whose main character is indestructible then how can you die?  Why do you need healing items?   There's no free one ups...you can't die, so you just go through the game...just to get to the end.  What's the point?  But that's not the fucking stupid ass part of the game...the fucking stupid ass part of...

X Men Origins: Wolverine

"X Men Origins: Wolverine" is the fourth movie in the X Men franchise this time focusing on one character who is probably the most memorable character in the group. This focuses on Wolverine before he joined the X Men and it is a solid but forgettable movie full of some great fight scenes but no momentum. Hugh Jackman is fine as Wolverine, Danny Huston is great as the villain and Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins look good but it takes too long to set up the story It also has a weak villain in Liev Schreiber who goes back and forth between evil and maybe good? This is a better movie than the third X Men but I wish they would make a fourth of the original series because how many of these origin movies can they make before we "Cry Uncle!".

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE (2009)

BOTTOM LINE: Although much better than X-Men 3 in terms of story, this instalment in the franchise is a little flat and uninspiring, not going anywhere terribly interesting despite some great visuals, a handful of nice action scenes, and of course, Hugh Jackman’s solid presence. THE GOOD: The X-Men franchise took a creative u-turn with the third instalment, sacrificing story for lots of noise and action in start contrast to the first two films. “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, despite it clumsy title, has a stronger story to tell this time around in focusing on the character of Wolverine. Hugh Jackman reprises the role and serves as a very solid anchor for the cast and the film, and managing to occasionally deliver the trademark wit that has made the character so well loved. The film starts off with a very effective prologue and title sequence which shows a young Logan (aka Wolverine) and his brother Victor (eventually played by Liev Schreiber) as they live...

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Plot: We follow the classic X-Men character Wolverine and his origins from small boy to soldier to the Weapon X project.  Wolverine seeks revenge on his brother Victor as well as all those who experimented on him. The title should have been called Wolverine Fights A lot.  That’s all he does. The movie feels like some two bit action extravaganza that Hollywood pumps out just in time for May, but because it’s Wolverine and because it’s Hugh Jackman, I accepted it and had a good time.  But if you are expecting a powerful comic book movie like the X-Men trilogy was, you will be supremely disappointed.  It’s just not that.  I guess for me because I grew up on Wolverine, watched the cartoon and the movies, that I didn’t need a deep character development.  But if you know very little about Wolverine, you will be very confused and wont care.  It moves at a warp speed pace, which is fine, but it did bother me sometimes.  I...

X-Men Orgins: Wolverine Review

I just check out the new exclusive X-men Origins movie, and for those who haven’t scene it yet..It’s definitely worth a look…This adaptation of the X- men story is the best so far. All the mysteries are finally revealed in this one as director Gaven Hood takes us on a ride thought the haunting and troubling past of Wolverine, explaining everything from his solid antemium core to the origins of his name, and even his unexplainable memory loss. As if answering all the cliffhanging questions about Wolverine wasn’t enough, Hood managed to intertwine the past of Wolverine with that of other mutants such as Sabertooth, Gambit, Night Crawler, Deadpool, Beak, Blob, and even Cyclops. In the movie, Wolverine is living life as regular as possible despite his mutant abnormalities. Along side his brother (Victor Creed) Wolverine leaves the protection of his family and home to life a better life more suitable for people of their kind, a life of blood and killing....

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE

So here's the first big summer movie of 2009... and not a bad one. The title, X-Men Origins: Wolverine , suggests that the franchise might make further movies focusing on one of the main characters from the previous X-Men movies. Of course they started with the most popular, Wolverine. I must say that while the movie isn't perfect, it is better than the other X-Men movies I've seen. This one is a little darker and that's what I prefer amongst these movies based on comic books. I can do without the cheesy Spider-Man crap. Just like the Watchmen movie, this one has a very cool opening credits sequence. In fact, the whole first 20 minutes or so after those credits are fantastic. The beginning of the film shows how both Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman again) and his brother Victor (played by Liev Schreiber) are mutants as they each have variations on very sharp nails that can emerge from their hands when angry, or as needed. They use their power as soldiers in war, but Logan (his...

Movie Review: X-Men Origins

I am a big X-men fan, and this Wolverine movie had me stoked. I watched the movie last Tuesday because movie tickets are so cheap on that one magical day of the week and here is my humble attempt of a review. With respect to this movie, people can either fall into two distinct classifications: people who know Wolverine through the comic books, and people who know Wolverine ONLY through the previous X-Men movies. The latter would have no problem appreciating the film. It is the former, where the problem might rise. For hard-core Wolvie fans, in order to appreciate this film, you should suspend all prior knowledge and expertise in X Men facts, and accept the film for what it is: a visual candy. Watch this movie because of the astounding special effects and the smashing (pun intended) fight scenes. Female viewers will get an extra treat from male actors with the “X-Factor”, if you know what I mean. In terms of the plot, the movie branched out far away from the comics. I...

X-Men Origins as reviewed by the Vulcan Stev family

Reviewers: VS, PIT #1, PIT #2, PIT #3 VS – 1.5 pointed ears I’m being a little more harsh than the kids.  Yes we are treated to Wolverine’s origin story.  The character’s backstory as revealed in the comics is convoluted at best and I’m not going to fault the writers for picking and choosing the elements they want to use.  I’ve seen complaints online about the use of Professor X and Cyclops in a Wolverine origin as neither of those characters seems to know anything about Wolverine in the first movie.  This is handled fairly well in my opinion as Wolverine does not directly interact with either character during the course of the film. I’m not going to rail against the bending of the laws of physics this film inflicts as it is a COMIC BOOK adaptation.  I can view the movie for what it is.  My main problem with the film is that story focuses too much on style and not enough on substance.  This is an origin film...

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Let me preface this by saying that I’ve been a fan of Wolverine since the late 80s/early 90s and am pretty much a fanboy, so I’m going to be a little biased in the review. Having said that, I will try to be objective. THIS…FILM…WAS…AWESOME!!!! Hugh Jackman really beefed up to be a more savage Wolverine. His goal was to return to the gruff version of the character we got in the first X-Men film. I think he succeeded. Liev Schriber is surprisingly convincing as Sabretooth. I think the decision to not bring back Tyler Mane was a good one. Although Mane resembled Sabretooth more (with the help of makeup), Schriber got the character down pat. I don’t know much about Willian Stryker, so I can’t compare Danny Huston’s take on the character was spot on or a departure from the source material, but from a purely thespian standpoint, he did a pretty good job, and in my opinion, a far better job than Brian Cox did in X2: X-Men United ....
