Wo Hu (Operation Undercover) (Hong Kong)The Gist
After Hong Kong is returned to China in ’97, the triads become more prominent all around the region. The HK police force comes up with a plan to plant not one, not 10 but 1000 moles into the triads to get insider info to cripple the underworld boss. Many known actors are put in: Eric Tsang Chi-Wai, Francis Ng Chun-Yu, Julian Cheung Chi-Lam, Jordan Chan Siu-Chun, Miu Kiu-Wai, Sonija Kwok and Shawn Yue.
What Do I Think?
First and foremost, here’s a warning: This is a Wong Jing production. This means we have a sloppy production, actors wearing the same clothes at almost every scene (probably due to non-stop continuous shooting to save on production time), lame scenes to attempt to make the audience laugh and situations that are none too believable.
I wanted to watch this because of all the big names in the cast. I knew that it’s a story where they will put 1000 undercover cops in the triads. When I heard about it, I immediately felt that it’s a pathetic concept. Upon watching the execution, it became clear to me that it was even more pathetic than it sounds. That was fine. After watching the whole movie, how many undercover cops did we get to see? Two. 2!!! Anyhow, this is a Wong Jing production.
There were a few funny scenes ala Wong Jing goodness that were done not too badly. The part where Sonija Kwok develops a relationship with Eric Tsang. In reality there are some cases of young girls like much older guys. The film fails to convince me to accept that their mutual attraction is genuine. More like she was pointed with a gun and got forced to have a liking for him. Eric Tsang did not seem to mind a bit. Anyhow, this is a Wong Jing production.
The good part is that all the actors did pretty decent and consistent acting throughout the entire run. If there are any flaws, I would blame it on the director. Anyhow, this is a Wong Jing production.
Rating: 5/10
