2008 is the Horny Teen Age, apparently

Southland Tales (2006) Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Seann William Scott, Justin Timberlake, Amy Sedaris, Miranda Richardson The Gist: Summarising this film is like someone coming up to you and saying “You know that show Lost? I’ve never seen it, what’s it about? Oh I only have time for you to say four words though cause then I have to go down this mysterious hatch.” But here’s my gold star answer for what Lost and Southland Tales are really about: lots of confusing nothing. The reason I bring up Lost is because around the time this film came out I read an article about the JJ Abrams-isation of popular culture. It basically spoke about how films and TV shows can’t be just that single entity anymore, they need layers of extraneous mythology whether it’s graphic novels or secret websites or whatever. The amount of interest I had in reading the surrounding graphic novels after seeing this pile of “huh?”...

Southland Tales: A Brilliant Mistake

Take a plot inspired by two great Philip K Dick works FLOW MY TEARS, THE POLICEMAN SAID and NOW WAIT FOR LAST YEAR add a dash of Roeg’s THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH , a healthy dose of Alex Cox’s REPO MAN , spice it with pseudo-science fiction comedy and melodrama (trying to channel the Cohen Brothers) then add the final ingredient, THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACROSS THE 8TH DIMENSION and what do you get? You get this fustercluck! Kelly’s sophomore effort is a real disappointment but I just admire the effort; this is a brilliant mistake, as Elvis Costello would say. The film’s first fault is with its structure. The film begins like the introduction to a video game with abundant exposition that transitions into small vignettes, with separate scenes spliced together to make an incoherent mess. The second fault is in character development. Kelly introduces too many characters and the story bounces around from one to the other leaving the viewer...
