Another detour from silent cinema. I can’t completely control what Zip.ca sends me through the mail... but at least it sends me good stuff. Some spoilers follow. Would you be afraid of Gort? I’d be afraid. What’s not to fear from a malleable metal juggernaut from another world, with the strength of a tank and a death-ray built into his head? When Gort’s visor rises, he can direct the ray so precisely that it can disintegrate a soldier’s rifle and leave the soldier unharmed. But if Gort wishes, that ray can do the same to any human being, reducing him or her to bubbling slurry on the grass. (Michael Rennie), the wise, human-like pilot of the saucer that has landed in Washington D.C. in 1951. If we fear Gort, at least we know he (it?) is wielded by a learned, contemplative being. Unfortunately, none of this is true—not completely, anyway—and the results are a triumph for nihilist filmmaking. Rennie plays Klaatu...

The Day the Earth Stood Still. Let me just first say it’s pretty bad ass. I’m somewhat of a sci-fi nerd so you have to realize I’m a little partial to sci-fi kind of stuff. This movie ain’t nothing ground breaking and certainly isn’t anything we haven’t seen before. But having said that, it’s a good film. I enjoyed it very much. Keanu Reeves is really good in certain roles. Roles where he doesn’t really have to act. Like the Matrix, Johnny Neumonic, Point Break, Bill and Ted. And this role fits him perfectly. He’s just pretty much gotta look good for the camera and give questioning head tilt every once in a while. And Jennifer Connelly is just smoking hot. But she’s a pretty good actor really. I could almost believe she was one of the world’s most prominent extraterrestrial biophysicist. Almost. John Cleese is very believable as a Nobel Prize winner in some form of Biology. The little kid is kind of an asshole. But...

Deep down inside.. my heart is shattering into a million pieces. Keanu Reeves, I am going to murder you. The Day The Earth Stood Still is about an alien named Klaatu who comes down to Earth with his bodyguard GORT to begin initiating the extermination of the human race in order to save the planet. Then we have Jennifer Connelly's character who comes in and tries to persuade him to change his mind. Now as some of you already know, The Day The Earth Stood Still is a remake of a 1951 sci-fi movie of the same name which is considered a classic. And let me say this, if you are going to so bold as to remake a classic film.. make it better! Don't think that just by slapping on some cool special effects and visuals you are going to come out with a great film. Don't think you can live up to the original cause that is just dumb. And that's what this movie is. Dumb. This film took a really great story and turns it into a completely boring piece of shit. And...

BACK COVER SYNOPSIS: Epic action and mind-blowing effects rock the planet in this thrilling reinvention of the sci-fi classic THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. Keanu Reeves portrays Klaatu, an otherworldly being, whose arrival on Earth triggers an unstoppable series of events that threaten all of mankind. In a desperate attempt to save humanity, governments and scientists race to unravel the mystery behind the visitor’s appearance. When a woman (Jennifer Connelly) and her young stepson find themselves embroiled in the alien’s plan, they become the world’s only hope to stave off apocalyptic annihilation. FILM REVIEW: Although the above synopsis promises a “thrilling reinvention of the sci-fi classic”, there is nothing in this updated version of “The Day The Earth Stood Still” that is the least bit in keeping with that promise, save for some wonderfully rendered visual effects shots. The film does keep with the original premise of an...

BOTTOM LINE: Decent, but unremarkable remake of the 1950's sci-fi classic which pitches a quite wooden and uninterested Keanu Reeves as the alien Klaatu coming to save the Earth from its inhabitants. THE GOOD: By and large this film makes the smart move of keeping the story from the original Robert Wise film intact, with the one change being a more environmental focus as opposed to the nuclear holocaust theme of the original (as befitting the times within which we live). As a result, the story itself is very strong. Keanu Reeves plays Klaatu, an alien who takes human form and has the mission of saving the Earth. The humans initially take this to mean he has come to save humanity, but as Helen Benson (Jennifer Connolly) and her adopted son discover, he literally means saving the Earth from humans whom the aliens have judged to be killing the planet through our toxic ways. However, as Klaatu spends more time among humans, he discovers that we deserve a chance to rise above...

I have never watched the original, but I’m not one of those pricks who is prejudiced against “old” movies, in fact I like kicking those people in the face as a sport. But I’m quite young and haven’t yet watched as many films as I’d like. Hell, I watched “Citizen Kane” less than a year ago, and only after some friends gave me a hard time about not having done so already. There is an arm-long list of classics I have yet to watch. “The Day The Earth Stood Still” is not high on it. Not when movies like “Ben Hur” have not yet visited my DVD drive. I stumbled across this remake and I have to admit I have a strange soft spot for Keanu Reeves. Perhaps because I think he’s a decent actor who gets so much hate for not being capable of many facial expressions. I agree he’s limited, but I’ve never seen him bring down a good film. You can see an actor is hated simply because it’s “cool” to...

It begins in 1928 when Keanu Reeves discovers a mysterious glowing sphere and fast forward to the present day with Dr Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly), a Princeton astrobiology professor. One evening, she receives a strange call and the next thing, she is hastily escorted by the government to meet with other scientist for an emergency. She learns there’s a foreign space object approaching Earth in less than an hour time. It finally lands on Manhattan Central Park as a huge glowing sphere. A glowing human hand reaches out from the sphere and as Helen tries to receives it, a gunshot is fired at it. They the rescue team try to save him and discover there’s a human form beneath the thick layer of meaty substances. It is Keanu Reeves. woo… OK, to cut the story short the movie is actually about Keanu Reeves trying to protect the earth from human’s destructive nature by eliminating the human race while Jennifer Connelly tries to convince him that human can change. ...
