Things We Lost in the Fire

Drama for drama's sake.

I don't mean that in a bad way. Based on the preview, I was expecting one thing -- more than likely the same thing everyone else watching the preview thought. Well...

This movie is about learning to cope. That's it. It's a human nature movie about learning to deal with what life gives you -- good, bad, or meh. A wife who's lost her husband, kids who've lost their dad, a junkie who lost (read - is giving up) his fix -- they all have to cope.

The movie starts off jumping back and forth between present and past. It requires the viewer to be paying attention. It's not flashbacks. The scene will change and you'll think it's a continuation of what was just happening and then the husband appears and you realize you're in the past. Again, not a bad thing. I have no issues with movies that do that.

I must say, I felt sorry for poor Jerry throughout the movie since he's just tossed into the situation and everyone's depending on him and expecting stuff of him when before people never even looked at him. He handled the situation fairly well given the circumstances.

This was by no means a movie theater movie and I'm glad I didn't see it in one. This is a "comfort of your own home surrounded by the people and things that make you feel whole" type of movie. Once it's done, you'll be happy for all the good. However, while it's going, I suggest some tissues.

For the people who like human nature/slice of life dramas, this is a movie for you.
