Genre: Crime/Drama/Romance Awards: Nom. for 1 Oscar - best lead actor Runtime: 104min Rating: NC16 for brief strong language. IN RETROSPECT Following the critically-acclaimed comedy-drama The Station Agent , writer-director Thomas McCarthy has forged a winning formula for his second film, The Visitor . It is a film that deals with post-9/11 issues, and these are handled with the simplicity of a brushstroke. Running at slightly more than a hundred minutes, The Visitor is also a character study of Walter Vale, the lead role played by an impressive Richard Jenkins who deserves an Oscar nomination here. From a political standpoint, The Visitor exposes the unjustifiable actions and the coldness of the American bureaucracy on foreign immigrants. It does this only subtly, almost...

Visitor, The (Thomas McCarthy, 2008)

The Visitor Drums Up Harsh Reality
Drum roll, puh-leze. Here's another heartfelt immigration flick sure to bring Lou Dobbs's blood to boil. (See "Under the Same Moon.") This one revolves around a droopy college professor. Another contemporary theme? (See "Smart People.") But the real stars of this unsentimental take on our immigration disaster are Tarek, a Syrian musician, and his girlfriend, Zainab, a Senegalese jewelry designer. This modern-day Romeo and Juliet aren't threatened by familial feuds, but inhumane governmental policy. The Movie Slut was enchanted by another star in this must-see film: New York City in all its marvelous multi-cultural madness.
