The Gist: Once upon a time there was a girl (Ricci) in a small white-trash town in the Deep South. The girl was in love with a quite-slow version of Justin Timberlake, until he stupidly enlisted in the army and got posted to "The I-raq". Then the girl went hog wild and started getting drunk and having sex with everyone. One night J Tizzle’s friend is mean to her face with his fists and leaves her battered and bruised on the side of the road. Fear not, children, for a kindly religious man takes her into his home. And wraps a big metal chain around her waist and ties it to his radiator.

And then what happens?: The nice man sets about curing the girl of her “fever” which manifests itself in Ricci writhing about all sweaty in a bra and some underpants then hopping on any man who happens to wander into the house. The initial chain shenanigans are the highlight of the film, with plenty of angry “Git this chain offa me mister/Hell I will” style exchanges. Then we get to the banal “Mah daddy didn’t treat me no good/My wife done up and died” root of the problem, people learn life lessons and bla bla dee bla bla bla. Yes it was fun while it lasted, but you can’t have everything.

See it for: Ricci. She’s one of few actresses who could pull off this kind of character and be even halfway believable. There’s this bug-eyed quality to her where you honestly don’t know what she’ll do next.

Black Snake Moan

Don't let the trailer mislead you -- BLACK SNAKE MOAN is as much a sermon on the screen as it is sexploitation. Not exactly a Sermon on the Mount, mind you, it's more of a Sermon on the Mountee. Still, there can be no denying that this extremely unique film delivers far more than what the previews choose to reveal.

BLACK SNAKE MOAN mambos slowly, adeptly, unexpectedly. Yes, there's chained heat -- literally -- and plenty of delicious decadence, especially within the first hour. But under the skillful direction of Craig Brewer there's also a surprisingly tender narrative that is reminiscent of the parables found within the pages of the Bible where individuals experience not only a change in their lives, but true forgiveness as well. That's mighty powerful stuff.

The character arcs are as well drawn as any in recent memory. Lazarus (Samuel L. Jackson) is a God-fearing black man who once played the blues. He now lives them, what with his wife walking out of his life to be with his brother of all people. Rae (Christina Ricci) is a delectable Dixie chick with an insatiable itch, the kind that starts in the head but quickly works its way southward. Two down-and-out characters who pretty much exist outside both society and the law, living on the fringe, both literally and figuratively, and both desperately in need of healing.



"I'm going to cure your wickedness," says Lazarus. What follows is nothing short of an evangelical exorcism ending in an upbeat, redemptive finale; proof that with the help of God even the most wayward of lives can be saved.

Jackson is damn near perfect in the complex role of Lazarus. Even his blues singing comes across with conviction and passion. Likewise, Ricci is unforgettable as the white trash nymph every Duke lacrosse player can only dream about. She literally bares all in giving the perfomance of a lifetime. Justin Timberlake, S. Epatha Merkerson and John Cothran, Jr. round out the cast and are excellent as well.

In the final analysis, BLACK SNAKE MOAN (the title is from a 1927 blues song by Blind Lemon Jefferson) is a radical departure from mainstream cinema. It may be a B-movie in theory, but it rises way above that classification to achieve a genuinely affirmative and entertaining cinematic experience.

"Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with that judgement ye judge, ye shall be judged; with what measures ye mete, it shall be measured to you again." These words from the Sermon on the Mount ring true, and so it is with careful consideration that I hereby declare that BLACK SNAKE MOAN is, in my judgement, a film worth seeing. I do not feel I am bearing false witness, although that pesky, perky Jehovah's Witness lady that keeps coming by might disagree.

Black Snake Moan. And if you think the title of the movie is crazy.. wait till you see the actual film. Damn! A movie where Christina Ricci is super naked and super slutty and is practically chained up like a dog by Samuel L Jackson? You nowt his is going to be kick ass!



So Black Snake Moan is about Lazarus and Rae. Lazarus is a man who have been betrayed by his wife and is heartbroken. Rae is a wild girl with a history of sexual abuse as a child and looks for love in the wrong places. But chance comes and these two are brought together and we see a father daughter relationship grow from this unlikely pair.



And there ain't anything better than watching Christina Ricci be stark ass naked and wrapped around in a chain! This is one of Christina Ricci's greatest roles. And I'm not just saying that cause she spends most of this movie being hella naked and super slutty.



Rae is genuinely a very deep character that is so flawed but you still root for her. She sort of reminds me of Annette from Saturday Night Fever who is really jut looking for someone who will love her by the only way she knows how and that is fucking every single boy she comes across. And to think that Christina Ricci lost so much weight and still looks as hot as she did, wow!



But speaking from the POV of an 18 years old with crazy hormones.. I thin I'm in love with Christina Ricci after this. This girl practically throws herself into the nastiest sickest sex scenes I have ever seen since Monster's Ball and she showed absolutely no shame or regret doing it.



She was friggin hot. We even have one scene where Samuel L Jackson's got her chained up and is walking her in the jungle like she was some dog and she still looked hella hot! And I really envy that 12 year old kid that got to have sex with her. Damn you Leonard Thomas!



I love the soundtrack to this movie to! It's got a whole lot of blues and soul and a whole lot of blue grass country.And who knew Samuel L Jackson could sing?!



And it's great to see my man Samuel L Jackson back doing great roles like this after taking a tour down shitty movies like Snakes On A Plane. His character in Black Snake Moan is sort of what Jules from Pulp Fiction would have been if he went all Jesus crazy and started doing drugs. We have him being all Christian like quoting Bible verses left right and centre, we got him acting like an old hippie, planting his own veges, and laying the guitar and doing massive amounts of drugs that would even make Keith Richards go "Shit!"



Samuel L Jackson is crazy in this movie. And in a good way to. We have this man who is tempted in the form of a hot Christina Ricci but a the same time finds it hard to let her in after the hurt he has gone through in the past. And you know Samuel L Jackson really is crazy when Christina Rici is practically begging him to let her give him a blow job and he's like "Jesus save me!"



And Justin Timberlake's in this playing Rae's boyfriend. He's really kind of a wimp in this movie and has these panic attacks like they were epileptic seizures. And he is downright annoying in this film and takes away a lot of focus which was mainly suppose to be on Samuel L Jackson and Christina Ricci. But I was surprised at how well the guy could ct. He wasn't bad i this, it's just his character that irritated me.



Great film with knockout performances by Christina Ricci and Samuel L Jackson!

Black Snake Moan

With a title like Black Snake Moan and soundtrack filled with the blues, the tone for this film is set for some superb acting, if executed well.
This film is apparently based on a book of the same name. One of these days, I may go to the library and check it out.
Samuel L. Jackson is what you would expect from him, although he is a bit subdued…for him. He obviously has some pain from things that happened to him, which we find out in song form later in the film, that leads to him being the grumpy old man. Somehow, it works for him, but I have to wonder…what was up with the hair?
Christina Ricci looks hotter than ever in this role. Of course, that could be because she’s running around little to no clothing on for a good 95% of the picture. The way she writhes around is quite impressive. It takes talent to act like you’re more or less possessed and in pain, not to mention the emotional depth her character requires. Ricci has come a long way since being Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family, not to mention she has become a lot more comfortable with taking her clothes off on camera since Prozac Nation. There is one scene here where she just rips her top off and throws herself at a guy.
Justin Timberlake, having conquered the music world by bring sexy back a few years ago and giving us all a “Dick in a box”, tries his hand at acting. With many singers, they flop, especially if they try drama, but Timberlake does a pretty nice job. I think he has a future on the big screen, especially if he keep picking up roles of this caliber.
A couple of TV stars pop up here. S. Epatha Merkson is here as a pharmacist that is sweet on Lazarus, played by Samuel L. Jackson. You may know her better as Reba , the mail lady from Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. Also in the cast is Michael Raymond-James. Like Merkson, he’s not a household name, but you may know him as the murderous Rene from the first season of True Blood. His accent still leaves a lot to be desired, however.
I won’t lie to you, the main reason I watched this was to see Christina Ricci run around next to naked for most of the film, but after watching it, I must say that it was actually the story that kept me captivated more than her tight body. Dramas aren’t my first choice of film, so for me to recommend this film so highly is out of the ordinary, but it blew me away. There are a few things that could have been better, but that goes for any and every film. Black Snake Moan is a must see for any film fan.
