Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire

Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire - Directed by Lee Daniels, starring Gabourey Sidibe, Mo'Nique, and Paula Patton - Rated R And you thought Commodus' crush on his sister was disturbing... Precious is a difficult movie. I don't just mean that it's about the very difficult life of the title character, but it's also difficult to review. If you think that all movies are meant to entertain, then you may not like this film. I didn't find it entertaining at all. The subject matter is just a bit too bleak to allow for entertainment with this one. Precious is about an obese teenager from Harlem who has an abusive mother, is pregnant with her second child (the first one had Down syndrome) and is being kicked out of school. Oh, and the father of her two children is her own father. And her mother forces her to eat so she stays fat. And her mother physically abuses her. And her mother verbally abuses her. And...you get the point. If you find enjoyment out of any of that,...

Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire

If you feel like you've heard the story of multiple-Oscar nominee Precious before, then that's because you have. An underprivileged girl overcomes her poor upbringing, and familial abuse, to carve out a niche of her own... it's a fairytale that's been told so many times that it's now firmly entrenched under the 'Hollywood Cliche' heading. So why has there been so much fuss about a slice of overworked melodrama? Well, there are the performances. You can't discuss Precious without mentioning Mo'Nique's incredible (and incredibly brave) performance as Precious's mother Mary, one of the most hideously self-serving characters ever to sully our screens. She isn't just selfish: she's violent, abusive, ignorant, and downright mean. To take on such an obviously unsympathetic role requires some balls. Newcomer Gabourey Sidibe shines as Precious too, although the easy sympathy that director Lee Daniels summons for the character makes her role a far simpler one. Even so, she manages the...

FILM REVIEW : Precious: Based on the Novel

Upon my first hearing of it, I didn't know what to think. However, when you add on all the Oscar buzz for the film, it all equates to my expectation of Precious to be one of the greatest films of the year. I just saw it yesterday, and while it's not the perfect ten-for-ten that I was expecting, it certainly lives up to its hype as one of the year's best films. The film centers around Clareece "Precious" Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a black, obese teenage girl in 1987 Harlem. She has been raped by her own father countless times and has even given birth to his child, who had Downs syndrome. Her mother (Mo'Nique) is certainly no better than her father, as she physically and verbally abuses her daughter almost all the time. However, Precious finds hope in the form of friendship and guidance from the teacher at her alternative school (Paula Patton) and a social worker (Mariah Carey). While the plot and structure themed around domestic abuse is nothing new, Geoffrey Fletcher's...

Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire

Another gritty and shockingly real film by the producer of Monster's Ball . An illiterate 17 year old is pregnant with her 2ND child by her father, abused by her welfare dependent mother and among other problems is struggling in school. This teenager is essentially alone in the world. She is lost in the shuffle with little options or hope for escape. She is as strong as she is alone. Resilient even in the face of such misery her escape is a fantasy world where she is exactly what she wishes she could be. Her second pregnancy turns out to be a blessing in disguise as it leads her to a set of people who actually seem to care. I knew that this movie was going to be heavy and so I prepared myself for that. It has sort of a documentary type feel about it which I think added to the realness of the story. I can't even imagine such suffering and pain that this young girl has endured. Some of the scenes were so ugly that it was kind of hard to watch. It is just so sad and unimaginable that...

PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL 'PUSH' BY SAPPHIRE (Lee Daniels, 2009)

***½ USA An uncommonly resonant yet perpetually exasperating experience. Lee Daniels is astonishingly sensitive and incisive in the handling of his actresses. But he is staggeringly inarticulate when it comes to every other facet of directing. Entire flashbacks and fantasy sequences are woefully misconceived (not to mention, crudely shoved in), but more frustrating is the way Daniels lets several of the searing centrepiece monologues crumble to nothing as soon as they climax. He has no sense – or at least, a warped sense - of structure, pace, or how to organically foster a desired visual dynamism. Perhaps he recognizes and mistrusts the simplistic, didactic melodrama that is the film’s core. But a simplistic, didactic yet exasperatingly flashy melodrama is by no means a step up. That the film packs an emotional punch – and boy, does it ever – in the end has nothing to do with the pyrotechnics and everything to do with the blunt, withering force of the...

Movie Review: Precious

I didn't think I was going to write about this movie, but my sister told me I should.  Mostly to put closure on this heavy and profound experience... I saw it on Tuesday the day it came out.  And since seeing it, I haven't been able to get it off my mind. Lee Daniels moving adaptation of this book, was as I say very profound... not in a long time was I able to fully immerse myself in the characters lives the way I did.  It was hard not to feel sympathy for the main character, and even to feel hatred and anger towards her mother.  I won't go into any fine details about the plot, mostly because I don't want to rehash it.  I will say that it's about a girl, living in a lower class household, with her abusive mother.  She's pregnant with her second child, and she is striving for an education... even though her mother tells her to give that up and go on welfare.  The movie does not start off gradually, the scenes depicting physical and...

Precious: Hardcore Harlem Reality with a Shot of Fantasy

This movie has won me 10 massages in a bet with my wife, since I recognized Mariah Carey in the social worker Ms. Weiss, and she kept insisting, "No, she looks like Bjoerk." The credits proved that this was indeed the coolest thing Mariah Carey ever did, to just show up in a flick the way she really looks without applying "Operation Playmate of the Month" before getting out of the house!   I'm into movies, so I haven't read the book, thus I can't tell whether the movie lives up to the original story. But I'd say it has done its job in delivering a dose of Harlem reality to the dwellers of more pleasant places throughout the globe.   Child abuse is indeed an issue, and the way it's being addressed here and dealt with is very effective.   I guess it's superfluous to say that the gorgeous Paula Patton also did a marvelous job in her portrayal of Precious' Alternative School teacher, even if her pick of the role may be one of the aspects in which the film differs...

Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire

So this is the big week for The Twilight Saga: New Moon obviously this is a movie that I will never see as I don’t fit the criteria, That being either a young girl or a woman who is either completely lonely, more than likely a bit dowdy with weight and self esteem issues and a penchant for writing in Journals. While precious also falls into the category of unlikely for me to see as well; I can not ignore oscar buzz. Starring: Gabourey Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz Director: Lee Daniela Genre: Drama Rated: R Taking place in the mid 80’s Precious tells the story of an illiterate teen who get’s kicked out of school for being pregnant with her second child and enrolls in an alternative school in hopes that learning to read and write will change her life. Precious has an awful life in addition to being completely illiterate and not having any friends her mother both physically and mentally abuses her, hurling a frying pan one...

Precious

"Precious" is directed by Lee Daniels. It stars Mo'Nique, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Sherri Shepherd, and Paula Patton. This is the first movie for Gabourey Sidibe. "Precious" is based off the book "Push," by Saphire. It's not a true story. The movie is set in Harlem, New York. Claireece "Precious" Jones (Gabourney Sidibe) is a obese, 16-year old black girl who is pretty uneducated and is pregnant with her second child, as a result of being raped by her father. She has a verbally and physically abusive mother (Mo'Nique). She is given the opportunity to enroll into an alternative school. Her teacher, Blu Rain (Paula Patton) and her social worker, Ms. Weiss (Mariah Carey) both help in her efforts to turn her life around and make it a little better for Precious and her two kids. Acting is definitely the highlight of the movie. All of the actors give fantastic, powerful performances. Gabourey Sidibe is wonderful as the lead character, who provides a lot of narration. This was a...

Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire

"Precious" is the kind of movie people feel strongly about. It's a movie that deals directly with race. It deals with poverty. It deals with educational inequalities. It deals with obesity. It deals with incest and rape. It deals with violence, cruelty and hopelessness. It deals with things that are real and raw and provoke a reaction. Because of this it has become a Movie of Importance, enjoying widespread critical acclaim as well as box office success. For these reasons I bet it makes a serious run at the Oscars in a few months. All things considered, "Precious" will be one of the small number of notable films from 2009. And yet, as a piece of storytelling, it is an utter failure. The movie follows the travails of Clarice "Precious" Jones, an obese 16 year-old black girl who lives in tenement housing with her abusive mother, attends a zoo of a public school and finds herself pregnant with a second child sired by her now-absent father. Precious catches a rare break when a...

Precious

Precious....... Based on the Novel "Push"..... by Sapphire. This movie has got to have the longest title I have ever seen. I guess they just wanna take up as much space as they can on the advertisement boards or something. So anyway.. Precious ya'll! I love this movie man. It's the very definition of an underdog movie and I gotta say.. I was trully touched by the story. So Precious is about Clarice Precious Jones, a 16 year old, illiterate obese black girl, who is living under the poverty line in 1987's Harlem. Her mother and father abuse her physically and sexually, she is still in Junior High School and she is pregnant with her second child by her father. Odds against Precious is so overwhelming but the message the movie sends is that even in hard conditions, something precious and beautiful can still emerge. Let's talk about the cast first ya'll. Gabourey Sidibe makes an amazing acting debut playing the title role of Precious. Sidibe captures every emotion...

Precious

If I said the story involves: rape, incest, poverty, obesity, illiteracy and Mariah Carey; you’d be forgiven for thinking: maybe I’ll watch Avatarinstead. But Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire (to give it it’s full – and, yes, utterly ludicrous – title) is one of the best movies of the year. If you walk in expecting something “powerful”, you’ll get it. But you’ll also get a movie Prince would love; a movie which plays (in equal parts) like Purple Rain and For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf. This is not a work of slit-wrist social realism. Or rather – it is – but not the way you’ve seen it done before. This is the story of a girl named Precious.  We start in Harlem in 1987. Precious is sixteen and pregnant with her second child. Her first child has Down’s Syndrome. Precious’s father is the father of her two kids. She is...

"Precious" is that.

Precious was one of the most touching films I have ever seen. From the start, it captures your attention and immediately hones in on the story with no fillers and fluff in between to waste screen time. The film felt raw, sobering, and pure. It showed the struggles many face. Precious succeeded at telling a heartbreaking story and did the same with giving you hope for what has yet to come. The only problem I see with the film is the abrupt ending. It makes everything seem too easy and doesn't show what she had to do in order to get her life together. Mo'Nique's acting was phenomenal and authentic. She portrayed a troubled mother taking her aggression out on her child so well and with such raw emotion. Sidibe does a fantastic job in her first role and gives an Oscar worthy performance. A must-see film that will touch you in places you have never been touched before. 3 and a half out of 4 stars.

Super Marcey's Precious Review

Rating: 4.5/5 Precious is the story of a teenage girl, she’s over weight, illiterate and she is pregnant with her second child (she got pregnant both times because her father raped her) and she has enrolled in an alternate school in the hopes of turning her life around. Meanwhile she has to deal with her abusive mother who just wants to get as much welfare off her as possible. Precious is not exactly a happy film, in fact after I watched this I felt like my soul had been sucked out. That isn’t to say this is not a good film, it is an excellent and well made film, it just isn’t exactly a happy one. Precious is a sad story, but unfortunately her situation is not one of fiction. There are many teens out there in her situation or in a similar situation and something like this really aims to bring light to that and make people aware. I honestly can’t imagine what I would do if I was in the situation that Precious was in. Her life really does suck, she has a...

Stunning performances but emotionally inconsistent

I should start out by emphasizing that I disagree with much of the criticism the film has been receiving. A common disparagement condemns the movie as "emotionally manipulative" and "superficially inspirational", much like other films that fall into the category of the "inspirational dramas" depicting stories of individuals overcoming obstacles and hardships that many people seem to hate. Well, I personally found that the film portrays a reality far too bleak and dismal and brutal for it to possibly be considered "inspirational"; in addition, while the film ends on somewhat of a high note, even that is laced with misery and becomes the lesser of two evils for the protagonist. Another criticism of the film – and of the book it is based on – is from the opposite end of the spectrum, and blames the film for portraying TOO bleak a situation to the point of exploitation. I personally found the scenario portrayed in the film to be strikingly realistic, and I think that people...

Genre: Drama Director: Lee Daniels Starring: Gabourey Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey Running Time: 110 minutes (plus trailers) "Love ain't done nothing for me" Based on the novel Push by Sapphire, Lee Daniels film Precious (full title Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire) follows the life and struggles of Clarice Precious Jones, a sixteen year old African American girl who lives in Harlem New York. Based on the description I’ve just given you I want you to stop and think to yourself: what do you think this movie is about? Based on the words “sixteen year old African American girl who lives in Harlem”, what do you Precious’s story is like? If your mind goes a bleak and horrifying place, don’t feel bad. Mine did too, and apparently so did Sapphires, because this truly is one of the most bleak and horrifying stories you will witness in theatres all year.
