Booze Revooze: A Drinker’s Skewed Review of Julie & Juila

Ramblings: A Virgin Chicktail Final Proof: 1 shot (Piss) Right upfront, if you’re a woman, nondrinker or both, this isn’t a review for you. i’m not a big fan of romantic comedies and i’m not gonna show a whole lot of mercy here. There are pro’lly tons of sites that’ll fluff the review for you like some big old lacy pillow, but here we take it straight. If you insist, there were two things i liked about this movie. i did laugh out loud like maybe three times, and i was even sober and even laughing with the movie, not at it. Meryl Streep’s acting was great, as usual. She should do a movie about drinking. Ok, that out of the way, let’s get down to it. i’m not a foodie, people, i’m an alkie. Give me home-brew, not home-cooked– though i’m not averse to getting cooked at home. About food: the first half an hour of the movie you get to hear every actor masticating like grandma with corn on...

JULIE AND JULIA (Nora Ephron, 2009)

** USA This is why you don't adapt a blog: you end up a with a movie where nothing happens. Other than Meryl Streep playing Robin Williams playing Daniel Day Lewis playing Julia Child. Whatever this is, it isn't acting - this is a whole new realm of Grotesque. Just give the woman her sixth Oscar already. Maybe she'll ditch the funny voices. (Since Ephron struggles to devise a feature's worth of dramatic or comedic interest, we are treated to a clip of Dan Aykroyd's SNL impression of La Child. It's not only funnier, but more grounded.) --- --- EDITED ON March 06 to add: --- --- An otherwise entertaining, characteristically/eerily perceptive post by Nick Davis on the year's Best Actress contenders set me off on a tirade languishing towards the bottom of the comments section. Since I'm not sure anyone over there will read it and since it elaborates on precisely what made this movie unendurable for me, I'll copy and paste it here: [I hope that the venerable...

Julie and Julia

Starring: Meryl Streep and Amy Adams Comedy, 2009 (PG-13) This is the true story of two different Julia's wherein Julia Powell is inspired by Julia Child. Julia Powell is a lowly government secretary who works in a cubicle and has friends who design things, write things, and have big titles. She is a writer but doesn't consider herself to actually be one because she couldn't find anyone to publish her book. Shortly after her and her husband move to Queens she grows tired of her uninspired life. She loves cooking and decides to cook 524 recipes from Julia Child's cook book in 365 days and write a blog about it. Well, french cooking is not as easy as Julia Child makes it look and with a full time job the task becomes way more difficult then she ever imagines but also yields amazing rewards that she never thought possible. This movie is very touching. So many 30 something woman can identify with feeling like they are going nowhere fast and have somehow ended up in their 30's with...

this movie is quite enjoyable.  i can’t remember a movie i’ve seen in a crowd that has garnered such a positive response.  it is an absolute feel good movie.  also maybe somewhat of a chick flick, but i really enjoyed it.  and will see it again if i can coerce a lil hottie to go with me. the tag line is “based on two true stories”.  it parallels a book by the chick that’s played by amy adams, who i am totally in love with, and julia child’s book about her time in france.  julia child is played to a tee by meryl streep.  stanley tucci plays paul child, julia’s husband and i’m not sure if he’s ever been better. i really don’t want to say much about it other than go see it.  we had two special screenings of this film before it was released and they both sold out.  it came out up against G. I. Joe, and actually beats it in attendance during the matinee hours.  when all the...

Julie & Julia

"Julie & Julia" is written and directed by Nora Ephron (who wrote "When Harry Met Sally" and wrote/directed "Sleepless in Seattle) and stars Meryl Streep ("Mamma Mia!," "Doubt"), Stanley Tucci ("The Devil Wears Prada"), Amy Adams ("Enchanted," "Doubt"), and Jane Lynch ("Role Models") has a brief role. This is another good movie that came out this summer...putting Meryl Streep in the lead role is always helpful. The movie is base off two books, "My Life in France," by Julia Child and "Julie and Julia," by Julie Powell "Julie & Julia" follows the lives of two women, Julia Child (Meryl Streep) starting in 1949 and Julie Powell (Amy Adams) in 2002. Julia Child has moved to Paris, France with her husband Paul (Stanley Tucci). She decides to enroll in a cooking school and soon impresses the class full of male chefs with her talent. This leads to teaching aspirations as well as writing a French cookbook for American chefs. 53 years later Julie Powell (also married) decides to start...

Super Marcey's Julie & Julia Review

Rating: 3.5/5 Yes this is one of those based on a true story films, however this a bit different than the norm. This tells the story of two different women, in two different times, and one directly affects the other. The Julia Child's side of things, we first meet her after she has moved to Paris with her husband and her cooking profession is taking off. The Julie Powell side of things, we first meet her as she is moving with her husband, she isn't terribly happy with her job and she wants to start something she can finish, which happens to be cook all of the recipes in Child's book 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking' in a year and keeping track of the progress via blog. This film was based on the books by both Julie and Julia, and it was an interesting idea to have two stories, with these women.   Meryl Streep is simply fantastic as Julia Child, I wasn't sure how this was going to work, but she becomes the character! She is so enjoyable, that you really...

Julie & Julia

Meryl Streep is Julia Child. It’s ridiculous how well she embodies her. The accent is one thing (who hasn’t done a Julia Child impression while cooking?), but it’s her whole persona – her being – her…Julia Childness. Every second she is on the screen, you can’t help but smile. Yes, she’s funny as Child, but she’s warm, too. She makes you want to jump into the screen with her and spend every day following her around the kitchen while she whips up a masterpiece and then sidle up next to her on the couch to read a good book and give her a big hug goodnight. It’s this warmth and familiarity that made Julia Child a hit on television and with her cookbooks and it’s this warmth and familiarity that makes this movie. “Julie and Julia” was inspired by a blog and book written by Julie Powell. She takes on the enormous task of making every recipe in Julia Child’s cookbook, Mastering the Art of...

Julie and Julia: Myrell Streep almost makes it worth it....

E veryone knows  Julia Child as the boiling water defying culinary chef who  showed America how to cook. But Julia Child wasn’t always Julia Child. We had missed Julie and Julia when it came out in the theaters; so once it was on DVD, we instantly rented it. The moment we finished, I had a lot of different opinions about it. As promising as this movie seemed when we first saw the trailer, the finished product is far from “inspiring”. At least, Julie’s story wasn’t. Truthfully, the movie would have been better if it were just about Julia Child; and not switching between two different lives. I can say though, that it was funny, and entertaining. And I did learn a little more about Julia Child then I had before, but it was not as satisfying as it could have been. This is a good movie for people who like food, or are interested in the life of Julia Child.

JULIE & JULIA (2009)

BOTTOM LINE: A charming film about the true story of how one woman finds inspiration and success from the life-story of celebrity chef Julia Child, although it is let down by the fact that it is too long and nothing much happens dramatically. THE GOOD: Julie Powell (Amy Adams) is having a crisis of sorts in that she cannot seem to get her life on track. She is working at a depressing job, frustrated with her abode above a pizzeria and unable to complete anything she starts, but does have a wonderful husband in Eric (Chris Messina) who encourages her to start a blog on cooking, a past time she loves. Julie vows to complete this blog by tackling all the recipes of Julia Child’s (Meryl Streep) first cook book over the course of a year. Before long, she develops a popular following which leads her to a successful writing career. “Julie & Julia” is a positive, warm film which cleverly parallels the lives of Julie Powell and Julia Child simultaneously as they...

julie and julia

before i watched julie and julia, i had very little idea of what it would be about. i knew some girl was cooking, from a cookbook. but why? it was a mystery. now i know: she was directionless. her career sucked, and she wasn’t happy with the shitty apartment she and her husband shared. so she starts a blog, and doing some cooking, which gives her direction. that sums up the film. at least she didn’t just have kids to get direction; maybe that would have been a different movie. i enjoyed it, julie and julia. it had some humour, and while i can’t really relate to the cooking, i certainly enjoy food. and watching food being made. i also fully admit i had no idea who julia child was. this movie taught me a lot about her: now i know she looks like meryl streep and speaks in a very annoying way. she also moves around a lot. anyways i give this movie a 5.3/7. it was above average, though not the best meal i’ve ever tasted with my eyes. i also read afterward that...

Movie Review: Julie & Julia (2009)

When I first saw the poster for Julie & Julia, I literally went ‘meh’.  A drama with Meryl Streep and Amy Adams as the two leads?  I enjoyed Doubt (which they starred in together in 2008) but this so didn’t look like my type of movie. However, I later found out that the film was about food.  And that it was based on not one, but two intertwining true stories.  And most of all, the book upon which the film was based arose out of a blog!  That was when the aspiring writer inside convinced me I had to watch it. I don’t like to spoil the plot, but in this case it helps to provide a bit of background.  Julia Child (Meryl Streep) is a famous American chef and author (pardon my ignorance), and Julie Powell (Amy Adams) is an average woman who attempts to cook every recipe in her cookbook in a year while chronicling her experiences in a blog.  The movie somehow manages to switch seamlessly between the two women – Julia...

Julie & Julia — 7

First off, yes i watch chick flicks, and most of the time i dont mind them. this is one of those, that was actually quite good, which is why it got such a good score, but so far no chick flick has ever been above a 7 on my scale. so this is high up there. Old cook, Julia, grew up all over the world, and lived a long time in Paris, thanks to her husband who worked for the US gov’t. She learned to love French cooking and tried throughout the whole movie to make a cookbook and get it published in the English language, since before her no French cookbooks had ever been printed in French. Other chick, Julie wants to cook every recipie in the book that Julia was trying to make in less than a year. so already off the bat, you know that Julias book will get published. why they didn’t end her story there was beyond me, but it did help keep your attention throughout the movie, so i guess it was a way to drag on what would have been a boring 60 min movie. The worst thing...
