*** Ireland A low-key Irish arthouse musical: a bunch of slick, heart-on-the-sleeve, grand indie ballads with the emotional IQ of an undergrad (though perfectly attuned to contemporary revival-clothes-wearing standards of gritty urban hip) strung together with a vague romantic non-plot going on in the quiet bits, wherein a couple of angsty, scruffy, melancholy though perfectly amiable songwriters make music together on second-hand instruments, put together a low-budget record over a weekend and go out to throw Frisbees on the beach at dawn.

Movies 365: Day 33 – Once

Once , 2007 Directed by John Carney Once is a film with a pretty simple story, Guy (Glen Hansard) meets Girl (Markéta Irglová), Guy falls for Girl, etc. The thing that makes Once different is that so much of the film is centered on music. As I mentioned in my review of Crazy Heart when a film focuses on music, it’s important for the music in that film to actually be good. For a great comparison of this check out Be Cool where the music is not good at all, and then see Hustle & Flow where the music is really amazing. In Be Cool the fact that the music isn’t good, undermines the very story of the film, in Hustle & Flow it lets us buy into the reality of the film, the fact that D-Jay’s music is good allows us to go on that trip with him and the rest of the characters. Thankfully, the music in Once is good. Really good. If it seems odd that I’m not spending much time on anything other than the music, it’s because Once doesn’t...
