Proposition, The (2005) * Hidden Gem *

"LOOK! It's CLEAN! LOOK HOW CLEAN IT IS!" Genre: Action Crime Western Drama Starring: Guy Pearce (Memento; L.A. Confidential ), Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast; Ripley's Game) Directed By: John Hillcoat Overview: A man is offered a proposition by the law: "Hunt down your evil older brother and kill him before we hang your younger sibling. He'd let you find where he's hiding. Make things easy for us and your younger brother will get a pardon. You have nine days." Performance: This director will certainly be making a name for himself. This Australian's career has been pretty much rock videos up till now, and with such big names as John Hurt , Danny Huston and Emily Watson , I'm sure he was just a little intimidated, telling these proven actors to do it again. The stars all play their roles perfectly, Watson delivers a tremendous monologue and even Hurt's small role manages to be one of the strongest. Rating: 10 Cinematography: A mix of professional normalcy and high-art...

THE PROPOSITION

"Is that what we are? Misanthropes? Lord no, we're a family." I don't think Howdy Doody would agree... THE PROPOSITION is a film that Sam Peckenpah would call his own. From the very opening scene, a piercing gun battle that will make your ears bleed and your stomach cringe, this Aussie oat opus is a masterpiece of menance. Writer Nick Cave and Director John Hillcoat combine their talents to revitalize the Western genre and they do so with uncompromising, ferocious carnage that is as pitiless and primal as anything brought to the screen in recent years. Needless to say, I loved this film. Cave is best known as the controversial singer/songwriter who first shot to fame in the 1980's as head of a band called "The Birthday Party." He then climbed to greater prominence in the 1990's with "Nick Cage and the Bad Seeds." He's been quoted as saying, "I want to write songs that are so sad, the kind of sad where you take someone's little finger and break it in three places." While...

The Proposition: Death Rattle

The film begins with the traditional hymn Happy Land sung over black and white pictures of death and carnage: this foreshadows the murder of the Hopkins family, which we learn will propel the narrative. Suddenly, the death rattle of a gunfight assaults our senses, shocking us into awareness and action. We quickly learn that these outlaws are brothers, exiled from the Burns gang who was responsible for the brutal rape and murder of the aforementioned family. Charlie and Mikey, now prisoners, are at the mercy of the moral tyrant Captain Stanley. Charlie makes a deal with the devil: he must kill his oldest brother Arthur to free himself and Mikey. The Captain’s justice is seemingly crueler than the outlaw’s crime: What happens when the rule of law is turned upside down? Do we sympathize with the Devil? “Just as every cop is a criminal, and all the sinners saints”. Stanley has come to Australia seeking to tame this rugged Outback, to civilize the natives, to...

The Proposition

Heart of Darkness doesn’t work with women. Oh sure, there are women who find the themes interesting, but the story is a very male myth. On the one hand you’ve got Colonel Kurtz, the guy who’s “Faced the Ultimate Evil”; on the other hand, Marlow, the man The Man has sent to kill Kurtz. An 800lb gorilla and a bad-ass; these are not characters whom girls take an interest in. In The Proposition it’s Danny Huston who plays the Kurtz-role. Guy Pearce is Marlow. Ray Winstone is the East India Company/The Man. It’s set in 19th century Australia instead of Africa. But the heart is the same, whether it’s the heart of the jungle or the bush. It’s a Western. You know Westerns: black hats, white hats, six-guns at high noon. The only difference is: this Western is set in Australia, so there are Aboriginals instead of American Indians and camels hitched to the stagecoach. The proposition is: Ray Winstone will spare the...
